HONOLULU - Despite a 17 kill performance from sophomore opposite Maurice Torres, the #9 Pepperdine men's volleyball team lost to #10 Hawai'i, 3-0 on Saturday evening inside the Stan Sheriff Center. The Waves fall to 4-9 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and a 6-9 mark overall, while the Warriors improve their record to 6-6 in the conference and 8-9 overall.
Set scores for the match were 25-20, 25-15, 20-19.
Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) tagged down a match-high 17 put aways on 31 swings, but was the only Wave to eclipse the double-digit mark as the rest of the team combined for 18 kills. Matt Pollock (Orland Park, Calif./Sandburg HS) and Parker Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) both tallied four kills, while Torres and Tyler Jaynes (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) each finished the evening with three block assists.
Pepperdine once again had a difficult time containing Jonas Umlauft, who leads the MPSF with a 5.00+ kills/set average. Tonight, Umlauft hit 16 put downs earned on a .560 clip to bring his team's attack percentage to .438. The Waves managed just a .167 success rate on the attack.
Pepperdine opened the match hitting .304 in the first frame, but that number was to be overshadowed by the Warriors' .520 average earned on 17 kills and just four errors. The home team held the lead the entire frame in its 25-20 first-set win.
The Waves held a 3-2 lead in the opening points of the second set, but Hawai'i quickly regained an advantage it would not relinquish for the remainder of the match.
Kasey Crider (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) led his squad with a team-best eight digs and 28 assists.
Ryan Leung (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i Baptist Academy) made his season debut in front of a hometown crowd with a single kill on a pair of swings.
Pepperdine kept the service errors to a season-low six, while Hawai'i committed nine miscues.
The Waves welcome UC Irvine and UC San Diego to Firestone Fieldhouse next week. Pepperdine faces off with the Anteaters on Thurs., Mar. 10 before a Sat., Mar. 12 showdown versus the Tritons.
