MALIBU, Calif. - The #37 Pepperdine women's tennis team dominated in doubles, but two Arizona singles wins in the tiebreaker sent the Wildcats past the Waves, 4-3.
The Waves (7-5) started off strong, sweeping all three doubles contests. Marie Zalameda (Los Angeles, Calif./Beverly Hills HS) and Anamika Bhargava (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) -- who are ranked #29 in the Campbell/ITA Collegiate doubles rankings, but have not played with one another since the fall season - disposed of Natasha Marks and Sarah Landsman 8-3.
Andrea Oates (Pretoria, South Africa/Pretoria Girls HS) and Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) secured the doubles point with an 8-4 win on court three, while Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Hidalgo Instituto) and Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/World Study Centre) recorded their first victory as a pair in the No. 2 match.
Oates won her third-consecutive singles match with her defeat over Debora Castany, 6-1, 6-3. The Wave improved her record from the No. 6 singles spot to 5-0.
Arizona, who is ranked #32 in the team rankings, tallied its first point of the day with a win on court two. Issara answered with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Susan McRann to put the Waves up 3-1.
The momentum began to swing in the Wildcats' favor after Kim Stubbe defeated Zalameda 6-4, 6-0 in the four slot.
Meanwhile, both Colffer and Bhargava had dropped the first set in their respective matches and were faced with a tiebreaker situation to determine the winner of the second frame.
Both Bhargava and Lacey Smyth had multiple set points, but neither was able to capitalize. Smyth eventually prevailed 11-9.
Marks took the early lead in the tiebreaker versus Colffer. Although the sophomore Wave was able to fight off two match points, Marks scored point No. 7 to secure the match and the Arizona victory.
Pepperdine looks to rebound from the loss on Wednesday, March 23 at home versus Stanford. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
