Waves Down Bulldogs, 4-3

FRESNO, Calif. - Despite dropping the doubles point to open the dual, the No. 26 Pepperdine women's tennis team rebounded in singles with four victories to edge Fresno State, 4-3. Marie Zalameda's straight-set win on court five gave the Waves' the dual-clinching fourth point.
Fresno State struck first, winning two of the three doubles matches. Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hildalgo) and Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/World Study Centre) picked up an 8-5 win versus Melissa McQueen and Olga Kirpicheva in the No. 2 spot.
The early setback did little to deter the Waves (10-6), who won four-straight singles matches before the Bulldogs could score another point. Anamika Bhargava (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) got things started with a two-set win versus McQueen. Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) put the Waves up 2-1 after defeating Abby Hayley 6-4, 6-1 on court six.
Issara improved to 5-0 when playing in the four spot with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Bianca Modoc, while Zalameda (Los Angeles, Calif./Beverly Hills HS) clinched the dual for Pepperdine following her 7-5, 6-3 win against Kirpicheva.
The Bulldogs salvaged the team loss with individual wins on courts one and two.
The Waves return to the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on Friday, April 8 when they play host to Cal Poly. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
