MALIBU, Calif. - Marie Zalameda and Andrea Oates of the #30 Pepperdine women's tennis team both earned singles match victories today, but it was not enough to top #16 USC on the courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The Trojans claimed the dual win, 5-2.
The win was USC's third straight and 10th overall this season, while the Waves slip to 6-4.
The Trojans captured the doubles point with wins on the first and third court. Newly paired Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Anamika Bhargava (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) tallied their second win of the season after defeating Lyndsay Kinstler and Danielle Lao, 8-5.
In singles, Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) took on #2-ranked singles player Maria Sanchez, but suffered a two-set loss, 6-3, 6-2. Lao gave the Trojans point number three after defeating Bhargava 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 2 match.
Oates put the Waves on the board with a decisive 6-1, 6-3 triumph on court six. The junior is 3-0 when playing in the six spot this dual season, and leads Pepperdine overall with 14 singles wins.
Cristala Andrews clinched the competition for USC, escaping with a 6-4, 7-5 win against Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/World Study Centre). Despite the setback, Issara is still 8-2 in duals in 2011.
Although the team win had been decided, Zalameda and Granillo were still hard at work in their respective matches. Zalameda rebounded from a loss in the first frame to defeat Alison Ramos 6-4, 6-4 in sets two and three.
Granillo had also lost her first set, only to top #113 Kaitlyn Christian 7-5 in the second. A tiebreaker was played to determine the winner of the third set. After going point-for-point with one another, Christian went on a late run to win 10-8 and hand Granillo her first dual loss of the season.
Up next on the Waves' slate is a March 18 dual with Long Beach State at 1:30 p.m. on the courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center, followed by a home contest with Arizona at 11 a.m. on March 19.
