MALIBU, Calif. - The #50 Pepperdine women's tennis team issued a dominating 6-1 win over #65 UC Irvine today at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The Waves improve to 3-1 in dual play this season, while the Anteaters drop to 0-2.
Anamika Bhargava (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) and Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) opened the day with an 8-2 win over Kristina Smith and Franziska Goettsching in the No. 2 doubles match.
Pepperdine's sweep of doubles continued with 8-3 wins at both the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) teamed up with Marie Zalameda (Los Angeles, Calif./Beverly Hill HS) to top Courtney Byron and Rebecca Kwan, while Andrea Oates (Pretoria, South Africa) and Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand) defeated Hannah Holladay and Brooke Schweyer.
Pepperdine won five of the six singles matches, but not without challenge from UCI. Nearly every set was decided by either a single break, or in the tiebreaker.
Issara had perhaps the most decisive win of the day, quickly putting away a 6-4, 6-3 match with Goettsching. She is now a team-best 4-0 in singles this dual season.
Zalameda and Colffer were the next to finish, both triumphing in straight sets. Zalameda took the first frame in the tiebreaker, before winning the second set 6-4. Colffer was able to avoid the tiebreaker in the first with a 7-5 victory, and put the match away 6-4 in the following stanza.
Oates was blanked in the first set but rallied back to win the second by a score of 6-4. The junior found her rhythm in the third and deciding set, allowing just two games on to seal the come-back victory.
The remaining matches found both Moore and Bhargava facing a third set situation. With the dual win secured for Pepperdine, both opted to play a first-to-10 tiebreaker set. Moore topped Holladay 10-8, while Bhargava suffered the only loss of the day after losing the tiebreaker 10-6.
Next up for the Waves is a 1:30 p.m. contest with Hawai'i on Tues., Feb. 8 at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. They close the week with home duals versus California and Texas on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
