MALIBU, Calif. - The #32 Pepperdine women's tennis team shut out regional rival #57 UC Santa Barbara 7-0 today on the courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The Waves improve to 6-2 on the season, while the Gauchos fall to 5-2.
Pepperdine won all three doubles matches to open the afternoon. Andrea Oates (Pretoria, South Africa) and Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand) won their fourth-consecutive contest, beating Paola Cos and Sofia Novak 8-5.
Anamika Bhargava (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) and Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico) clinched the doubles point for the Waves after an 8-5 win from the No. 2 doubles position.
In singles, Marie Zalameda (Los Angeles, Calif./Beverly Hill HS) quickly put away Novak, winning the first set 6-2 before shutting the Gaucho out in the second.
Granillo gave Pepperdine its third team point after a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Cos. Issara captured the deciding point for the Waves, as she defeated Jordan Dockendorf in straight sets.
With the dual decided, Bhargava and Oates played out their respective third sets with a tiebreaker. Bhargava edged Jill Damion 12-10 in the No. 2 match, while Oates commanded a 10-3 win on court six.
In the final match to finish, Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) took the first set 7-5 against Natalia Lozano. After trailing 2-5 in the second frame, Colffer went on an incredible 5-0 run to win the match in two sets.
The Waves return to action Wed., March 9 for a road contest with San Diego. They return home on Sat., March 12 when Pepperdine welcomes USC for an 11:30 a.m. dual.
