LONG BEACH, Calif. - The #9 Pepperdine men's volleyball team fell to 5-7 and 3-7 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action following a 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-17) loss to #6 Long Beach State.
Brad Hammerling led the 49er offensive assault with a career-high 16 kills earned on a .625 hitting percentage. As a team, LBSU recorded a .369 success rate on the attack, while limiting Pepperdine to just a .110 clip.
Matt Pollock (Orland Park, Calif./Sandburg HS) led the Waves with nine kills off a .500 attack percentage. Kasey Crider (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) dished 30 assists, while Mike McMahon (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) added seven digs.
The Waves had trouble finding their rhythm in the first frame, as the 49ers jumped to an 11-3 lead prompting head coach Marv Dunphy to call both of his timeouts. Long Beach State continued to swing well, and finished the set with a .500 attack percentage to put away the game 25-13.
Dunphy tweaked his line up in the second frame, calling upon Tyler Jaynes (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) in the middle and Beau Vandeweghe (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) on the outside. Pepperdine went point-for-point with LBSU, but the home team eventually battled to a 13-9 advantage. Dunphy altered his lineup once again, moving Sean Pedersen (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mount Carmel HS) from the middle to the opposite side.
Jaynes did his part by serving four-consecutive points to bring the Waves back within one, but the momentum shifted when Pepperdine found itself on the short end of a long rally to give the 49ers the 25th point and the two set advantage. Pollock finished the stanza with a team-best four kills.
The starting seven remained the same in the third, and the Waves jumped to an 11-8 lead after forcing a number of attack errors on the Long Beach State side of the floor. The 49ers climbed back, however, and ran to a 22-16 lead. The Waves continued to struggle to keep the attack in bounds and succumbed to a 25-18 defeat after the 49ers tallied their fourth block of the match.
Parker Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesora HS) made his first start of season with a season-best three kills and a dig.
The Waves continue action this week with a 7 p.m. match versus Cal State Northridge on Fri., Feb. 25.
