#51 Waves Suffer Home Loss to #5 California

MALIBU, Calif. - The #51 Pepperdine women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to California, who recently moved up to #5 in the Campbell/ITA team rankings. The Waves fall to 4-2 on the season, while the Golden Bears improve to a perfect 4-0.
The competition for the doubles point was close, beginning with a win at the No. 3 match. Andrea Oates (Pretoria, South Africa/Pretoria HS) and Tara Panu (Los Altos Hills, Calif./The Harker School) opened the afternoon with a decisive 8-2 triumph over Stephany Chang and Alice Duranteau.
The Trojans evened the score with a win on the second court, to keep the doubles point up for grabs. Marie Zalameda (Los Angeles, Calif./Beverly Hills HS) and Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) nearly pulled off a thrilling upset over #5-ranked Mari Andersson and Jana Juricova, but a late run gave the visitors a 9-7 win.
In singles, Cal proved its high ranking is well deserved as they won all six contests. Zalameda faced the #1-ranked singles player in NCAA Div. I in Juricova. After a narrow 6-4 loss in the first frame, Zalameda was overpowered in the second 6-0.
Issara battled back after a 6-4 loss in the first set, to win 6-3 in the second against #35-ranked Tayler Davis. The foes went game-for-game in the third and deciding set, but Davis eventually prevailed by a score of 6-4.
The Waves continue action tomorrow at 11 a.m. when they play #22 Texas at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. Following the women's dual, the #20 men's team takes to the court versus Boise State.
