Box Score: #13 UCLA 3, Pepperdine 0 (.pdf)
LOS ANGELES - The Pepperdine women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-15) decision to #13 UCLA on Wednesday evening at the Pauley Pavilion. The Waves drop to 3-4 overall, while the Bruins improve to 6-1.
Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) once again led the Waves with her 20th-straight game with double-digit kill totals. With tonight's 11 put aways, the junior opposite hitter is just two shy of reaching the 600 career kill milestone. Emily Cook Bio" href="http://www.pepperdinesports.com/sports/w-volley/mtt/cook_emily00.html">Emily Cook (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) tallied a career-high 15 digs to lead the defense, while Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) added 12.
In addition to a defensively sound evening, Cook led the Waves with a .389 (9-2-18) attack percentage.
The Bruins were led Dicey McGraw and Rachael Kidder, who each posted 11 kills.
UCLA came out hot in the first frame, jumping out to a 10-4 lead to prompt head coach Nina Matthies to spend her first timeout. The Waves clawed their way back with precision hitting and impenetrable blocking at the net. A denial from Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) and Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) knotted the score up at 16, but the Bruin attack continued to prevail, as they took the first set 25-20.
The Waves continued to be aggressive on the attack, but relentless defense in the UCLA backcourt kept Pepperdine at bay. A late Wave run fueled by a trio of kills from Hill and strong serving from Brittney Clark (San Jose, Calif./Presentation HS) kept the score close, but a kill at the swing of Kidder gave the Bruins the 2-0 lead heading into the break.
UCLA hit a sizzling .310 (11-2-29) to control the tempo for the third stanza. Although Pepperdine tallied one more kill than the opposition, the Waves could not gather enough momentum to force a fourth set and bowed out 25-15
Adelhelm accounted for floor-best four blocks, while Woolever managed the offense with 33 assists.
The Waves return to action on Sept. 10-11 for the UNLV Invitational. Pepperdine tangles with Cal State Fullerton on Friday at 4:30 p.m. (PT) before facing UNLV and Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.
