MALIBU, Calif. - Danny Worth, a three-year varsity letterwinner at Pepperdine from 2005-07, made his major league debut Sunday for the Detroit Tigers in a game against the Boston Red Sox.
Worth started at second base, batting ninth, and went 1-for-3 with an RBI infield single. His bases-loaded hit off Boston starter John Lackey broke a scoreless tie in the second as Detroit went on to post a 5-1 victory and remain 1.5 games behind AL Central Division leader Minnesota.
Worth is the 30th Wave to make it to the major leagues and is the fourth to wear a Tigers' uniform, joining current head coach Steve Rodriguez (1995), Patrick Ahearne (1995) and Dane Sardinha (2008-09). Worth was part of Rodriguez' first recruiting class and is one of about a dozen former Rodriguez protégés still playing at the professional level.
Worth was selected by Detroit in the second round of the 2007 MLB First-Year Player draft alongside nine other Waves. He advanced to AA in his first year with the organization before making the jump to AAA Toledo for the 2008 and 2009 campaigns. With the Mud Hens this season, Worth was batting .274 with two home runs, 14 RBI and 10 stolen bases through 36 games before receiving his call to the big leagues.
