4/6/2010 12:00:00 AM | Men's Volleyball
THE FACTS - The #3 Pepperdine men's volleyball team will spend the final two weeks of the regular season on the road. Despite being in fourth place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation at the moment, the Waves could still capture the league title. But they'll surely need to win twice this weekend, beginning at #1 Stanford and then at Pacific. The Waves are looking for their third win against a top-ranked team this year, having already beaten USC and Cal State Northridge when they were #1.
MATCH #22 - Friday (April 9) at Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto, Calif.: #3 Pepperdine (14-7, 12-6, fourth place) at #1 Stanford (16-5, 13-5, first place) at 7 p.m.
MATCH #23 - Saturday (April 10) at the Spanos Center in Stockton, Calif.: #3 Pepperdine at Pacific (8-18, 0-18, 12th place) at 7 p.m.
ON THE WEB - Subscribers to "Wave Casts" can watch live video of all the Waves' home matches at PepperdineSports.com. RANKINGS - The Waves began the season at #4 in the AVCA preseason poll, fell as low as #11, then quickly rose up and held the #1 ranking for two weeks. It appears Dunphy is only the fifth men's volleyball coach to reach the 500-win plateau (the NCAA does not keep official records). He began the 2010 season, his 27th at Pepperdine, with 491 wins and four NCAA championships.

DUNPHY - Marv Dunphy, now in his 27th season as head coach of the Waves, has time and again proven himself to be one of the top teachers in the sport. He has directed Pepperdine to four NCAA championships, each in a different decade (1978, 1985, 1992, 2005). He was the 2005 National Coach of the Year and is a three-time MPSF Coach of the Year. He entered the 2010 season with a career record of 491-189 (.722). Dunphy has long been involved with USA Volleyball, having been part of the coaching staff at five Olympics, including head coach of the 1988 team and consultant coach for the 2008 squad, both of which won gold. He has been inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame (1994) and AVCA Hall of Fame (2009).
ASSISTANTS - Former Pepperdine All-American J.J. Riley is in his second stint with the Waves. He was a student athlete from 1995-99 and was an assistant coach in the 2000 season ... After two seasons as a video coordinator and volunteer assistant, David Hunt was elevated to full-time assistant coach this season. He was honored in early February as part of the AVCA's Thirty Under 30, which recognizes up-and-coming coaches under the age of 30.
ROSTER - The Waves return 11 of 14 letterwinners and four starters plus the libero from the 2009 squad (plus a starter from the 2008 squad that was injured last season). Pepperdine returns two other players from last year's team, plus adds a transfer, two true freshmen and two new walk-ons to the roster for a total of 19 players. There are seven seniors, five juniors, four sophomores, one redshirt freshman and two true freshmen.
MPSF POLL - In a preseason vote of the MPSF coaches, Pepperdine was chosen to finish fifth in 2010. The teams were ranked as follows: USC, UC Irvine, Stanford, BYU, Pepperdine, UCLA, Long Beach State, Cal State Northridge, Hawaii, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego and Pacific.
LAST YEAR - Pepperdine had another typically outstanding season, but fell just a point short of making the NCAA Championships. The Waves went 22-5 overall and placed second in the MPSF regular season with an 18-4 record. They also finished second in the MPSF Tournament, falling to USC in the final in five games (the fifth set was decided by a score of 21-19). Unfortunately, top-ranked UC Irvine was selected for the lone at-large bid to the NCAAs. The Waves were #3 in the final AVCA poll. Paul Carroll ended his tremendous career by being named the National Player of the Year. He led the nation in kills for the second straight season and was named an All-American first teamer for the third time. Kasey Crider was named an All-American second teamer by Volleyball Magazine. Crider and Sean Grubbs were All-MPSF honorable mention.
VOLLEYBALL HISTORY - Pepperdine has won five NCAA men's volleyball championships, second only to UCLA. The Waves have won the MPSF Tournament four times and have won or shared nine regular-season conference titles. Pepperdine has won either an MPSF regular-season or tournament title in seven of the last 12 seasons. The Waves have finished in the top six in the final AVCA poll in each of the last 13 seasons. Pepperdine student-athletes have won national player of the year honors eight times and All-American accolades 73 times. A Pepperdine alum has competed for the U.S. at the Olympics every time since 1984 (Sean Rooney won gold in 2008).
ABOUT PEPPERDINE - Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won a total of nine NCAA championships in five different men's sports - one of just 14 schools to have accomplished this feat. Of the 14, Pepperdine is the only non-BCS school and has by far the smallest enrollment. The majority of Pepperdine's teams are ranked nationally year after year and several compete for conference and national titles.
