Men's Volleyball Wins at Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. - After a slow start, the #3 Pepperdine men's volleyball team defeated Pacific for the 14th consecutive time in a 24-30, 30-21, 30-19, 30-26 victory in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play on Saturday.
The Waves improved to 15-8 overall and 13-7 in the MPSF, while the Tigers fell to 8-20, 0-20.
Three Pepperdine players recorded double-figure kills: senior outside hitter J.D. Schleppenbach (Ventura, Calif./Ventura HS) and freshman opposite Maurice Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) with 17 apiece and junior outside hitter Cory Riecks (Auburn, Calif./Placer HS) with 16.
Junior middle blocker Tyler Jaynes (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) had 11 blocks to go with six kills, junior setter Kasey Crider (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) handed out 58 assists and senior libero Sean Grubbs (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS/Irvine Valley CC) had 12 digs.
The Waves had a .313-.167 hitting edge over the Tigers, who were led by Florian Gornik's 12 kills and Taylor Hughes' 11 kills. Pepperdine also had a 16.0-9.5 advantage in blocks.
After hitting just .171 in a first-game loss, the Waves raised their percentage to .621 in the second game, collecting 20 kills while making just two errors. Pepperdine did a fine job defensively in the third and fourth games, holding Pacific to .061 (11 kills and nine errors) and .111 (14 kills and 10 errors), respectively. Tied 17-17 in the fourth game, the Waves went ahead to stay after a kill by Crider, a block by Jaynes and a service ace by Crider.
The Waves close out the regular season on the road next week, playing at Long Beach State on Thursday (April 15) and UC San Diego on Saturday (April 17). Both matches are at 7 p.m.
