Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) had a 16-kill, 10-block, 10-dig performance against #10 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday (March 13). He posted season highs in the latter two categories. Torres helped the second-ranked Waves rally from a 2-1 deficit to win the match in five games (30-17, 28-30, 28-30, 30-25, 15-7).
The win over the Gauchos moved the Waves (12-5, 10-4) back into a tie for first place in the MPSF with #1 Stanford, and gave Pepperdine its 11th victory in the last 12 matches.
Torres also had a team-high 13 kills in the Waves' non-conference win over Ball State last Thursday (March 11).
Over the two matches, he averaged 3.62 kills, 1.75 blocks, 1.75 digs, 0.38 aces and 5.00 points. For the season, Torres is averaging a team-high 4.24 kills (good for #9 in the MPSF and #18 nationally) along with 1.37 digs and 1.02 blocks.
Torres shared the award with Kevin McKniff of Cal State Northridge. Torres also won the MPSF weekly honor on Feb. 1, and this is the fifth time a Pepperdine player has earned a share of the award this season.
The Waves are in the midst of playing 10 of 12 matches at home, but they'll take this week off before hosting #5 Hawaii twice on March 26-27. Match times are 7 p.m. "Wave Casts" subscribers can watch both matches online at www.pepperdinesports.com.
