RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The #4 Pepperdine men's volleyball team nearly opened its season with a comeback victory at NAIA power California Baptist, but the visiting Waves ended up falling just short in five games (23-30, 25-30, 31-29, 30-27, 14-16) on Saturday.
Senior outside hitter Brent Schirripa (Los Angeles, Calif./Crespi Carmelite HS) made his first career start and had a career-high 17 kills to go with six digs. Senior middle blocker Rodnei Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil/BYU) added 14 kills and seven blocks while hitting .385 (14-4-26).
Junior setter Kasey Crider (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) collected 45 assists and six digs while junior middle blocker Tyler Jaynes (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) had 10 blocks and five kills.
Pepperdine (0-1) hit .189 to CBU's .243. In the past few days, Cal Baptist already defeated Long Beach State and UCLA. This was the Lancers' first win over the Waves in their seventh try.
The Waves were unable to overcome 26 kills from Adiel Tiedjop and 24 kills from Levi Cabral.
After dropping the first two games, the Waves rallied to win the next two by holding CBU under .200 hitting in the third and fourth games. Pepperdine was able to jump out to a 7-3 lead in the fifth game, and the Waves were still up by four at 13-9 when the Lancers rolled off five straight points to go ahead 14-13. A kill by senior outside hitter J.D. Schleppenbach (Ventura, Calif./Ventura HS) tied it up, but the Lancers got kills on the next two points to win the match.
Pepperdine opens Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play with upcoming road matches at UC Irvine (Wednesday, Jan. 13) and UCLA (Friday, Jan. 15). Both are at 7 p.m.
