FORT COLLINS, Colo. - A balanced attack led the Pepperdine women's volleyball team to a three-set sweep (25-15, 25-23, 25-18) of Cal Poly on Saturday afternoon at the Colorado State Asics Classic.

No one on the Waves (2-0) had more than eight kills, but five players had at least five kills. A strong defensive effort allowed Pepperdine to outhit Cal Poly (0-2) .219 to .106.

Sophomore outside hitter Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) and sophomore middle blocker Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) each had a team-high eight kills. Senior outside hitter Rachel Grochmal (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) added seven kills.

Freshman middle blocker Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS), the only newcomer in the Waves' starting lineup, had six kills and hit .455 (6-1-11). Sophomore opposite Kristen Seaton (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo HS) contributed five kills.

Senior setter Kiah Fiers (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Peninsula HS) directed the offense to the tune of 28 assists. Sophomore libero Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) had a team-high 16 digs.

"Our kids played really well," Pepperdine assistant coach Tim Jensen said. "I'm proud of the way the team stuck together. They showed grit and toughness in winning the second set, which we like to see. In sets one and three we outserved and outpassed them, and if we keep winning those battles we're going to be tough to deal with. It was a great match from our freshman middle blocker, Victoria. She had some clutch kills and hit for a high percentage."

The Waves led nearly all of the first set. With a 13-9 lead, Pepperdine went on a 5-0 run to double Cal Poly's score, with Seaton collecting two kills and Grochmal notching a service ace. In the second set, the Waves trailed 23-22 but scored the final three points on kills by Fiers and Grochmal and a Cal Poly attack error. The Broncos led by as many as three points in the third set, last at 11-8, but a 7-0 Wave run that saw a Cal Poly service error followed by five attack errors and a Frederick kill put Pepperdine ahead to stay at 15-11.

Pepperdine was the top team listed in the "also receiving votes" category in the AVCA's 2009 preseason poll.

The Waves have won all three meetings against Cal Poly in this decade.

Pepperdine will look to clinch the tournament title with its finale against Oregon State on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. PT.
