Moment #7: Women's Volleyball Starts Season 13-0

Beginning on Monday (June 8) and continuing over a two-week period, PepperdineSports.com will count down the top 10 athletic moments of the 2008-09 school year. One highlight will be posted each weekday until the #1 moment is unveiled on Friday, June 19. The top moments were chosen as the result of balloting by members of Pepperdine's staff.

Oct. 2, 2008: The Pepperdine women's volleyball team tied the school record for the best start to a season when the Waves won their 13th straight match to open the year. It wasn't easy, as the Waves required five sets to win their WCC opener at Saint Mary's, 25-22, 23-25, 17-25, 28-26, 15-10.

In fact, after falling behind 2-1, the Gaels served for match point three times in the fourth set before the Waves prevailed. Tied 26-26, Lilla Frederick had a kill and Julie Rubenstein won the set with a service ace. In the decisive fifth set, Pepperdine jumped out to a 6-0 lead.

Rubenstein led the way as usual with 20 kills and 17 digs while libero Stevi Robinson had a remarkable 30 digs.
