MALIBU AYSO FAMILY DAY AT PEPPERDINE: Pepperdine Athletics invites members of Malibu AYSO and their families to come cheer on the Pepperdine women’s soccer team as it plays host to Washington State Sunday, Sept. 14 , 1:00 p.m. ... All Malibu AYSO members and their families with a coupon may purchase tickets at the ticket entrance at a discounted rate of $2 a person ... Ticket coupons will be available in each of the coaches’ boxes at Webster, Bluffs, and Malibu High on Saturday morning ... 2008 Pepperdine women’s soccer schedule posters will be available for attending fans, as well as the opportunity to win a Pepperdine mini-soccer ball during a competition at halftime ... The Pepperdine Women’s Soccer team will also be available for autographs on the soccer field after the game.
WAVES VS. UT & THE SEC: Friday’s match between Pepperdine and Tennessee marks the first meeting between the schools ... The Waves are 4-0-1 all-time vs. teams from the Southeastern Conference, a record that includes wins over Arkansas and Alabama, and a 2-0-1 mark vs. Ole Miss.
WAVES VS. WASHINGTON STATE: Pepperdine's all-time series with Washington state is tied at 1-1 ... The Waves won the first meeting at home in 2002, 2-0 ... The Cougars returned the favor two seasons later with a 1-0 victory in Pullman ... Pepperdine is 18-18-6 all-time vs. the Pac 10, including this year's 1-1 tie with Arizona State on Aug. 29 ... The Waves will renew their rivlary with UCLA on Oct. 3.
RUPP & ROLL: Senior Amanda Rupp has scored three goals over the last three matches and currently leads the Waves with six points ... Rupp’s point and goal totals have her tied for third in the WCC with Santa Clara’s Kendra Perry ... Rupp needs just two more goals to tie her season record of five set in 2007 and three more to crack into the Pepperdine top 10 for career goals.
RELAX AND STAY AWHILE: While it certainly hasn’t been their intention to offer free soccer, the Waves have already engaged in three overtime contests over the first five home matches and are on track to shatter the program record for most OT games played in a season (7 in 2007) ... Pepperdine has averaged four overtime matches per year over its 15-year history, but have gone past the 90-minute mark 16 times in the last two-plus seasons.
RUNNING THE GAUNTLET: On paper, Pepperdine is scheduled to play its first nationally ranked opponent Friday in #23 Tennessee, but UCSB and Cal State Fullerton have both jumped into the national polls since coming to Pepperdine – and San Diego, which started the year ranked 24th, is back climbing the charts thanks to a three-match win streak ... By the end of 2008, the Waves could end up playing nine schools that have either spent time in the top 25 or in the receiving votes portion ... Entering this weekend, the combined record of Pepperdine’s 20 opponents is 56-38-6 (.590).
SUNDAY AFTERNOON DELIGHT: Catch the Waves Sunday at 1 p.m. when they play host to West Region rival Washington State ... The Cougars enter this weekend with a 1-1-3 record ... Waves players will be available after the match to sign autographs ... Free 2008 Pepperdine women’s soccer schedule posters will be available to the first 100 fans in attendance.
MINUTE MAIDS: Pepperdine’s roster has proved its durability on the field this season as five of its regular starters have 85 percent of the time or more ... this group includes Ashley Copp (426 out of 478 minutes), Samantha Hire (463), Haleigh Guertin (437), Kayla Stolte (454) and Myriah Stockman (478), who is the only position player to not miss a single minute in 2008 ... Stolte had her consecutive-minutes streak snapped a 652:40 minutes in the 71st minute Sunday vs. Northwestern due to injury ... However, this streak pales in comparison to her collection of 3,240:13 consecutive minutes acquired between the 2006 and 2007 seasons.
LAST WEEKEND: The Waves posted a 1-1 record at the Pepperdine Nike Challenge, which featured the home team and San Diego taking turns battling Northwestern and Iowa of the Big Ten Conference ... Pepperdine beat Iowa Friday 1-0 in overtime on a goal from Amanda Rupp ... Sunday’s match with the Wildcats was not as kind as the Waves let a 2-0 lead slip away and ended up falling 3-2 in overtime ... Emily Wynne produced two assists in the loss, hooking up with Laura Cole and Rupp in the first half.
THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: Pepperdine is in the midst of a seven-match homestand (1-3-1), which is its longest ever to start a season ... The Waves scheduled two previous seven-match homestands midway through the 2005 and 2007 seasons and posted respective win-loss records of 4-2-1 and 2-1-4 ... Prior to 2008, Pepperdine’s longest season-opening homestand had been four matches, which took place Aug. 31 to Sept. 17, 2001.
WAVES AT TARI FRAHM ROKUS FIELD (1-3-1): The Waves are 98-34-17 (.715) in 15 seasons of playing at Tari Frahm Rokus Field, including a 4-3-4 mark in 2007 ... Pepperdine, which has yet to post a losing record at Rokus Field in any season, has recorded two unbeaten and four one-loss campaigns on its home pitch since the program’s inception in 1993.
THE HEAD COACH: The Waves are 116-62-28 (.631) under the direction of Tim Ward, who has served as Pepperdine’s skipper since 1998 ... Under Ward, the Waves have made the NCAA Tournament in five of the last seven years ... Ward has been with Pepperdine from nearly the beginning, as the program was established in 1993 and he became an assistant coach in 1994 before being elevated to the head position in 1998.
PEPPERDINE HISTORY: The Waves have made five NCAA Tournament appearances in their 15-year history, with all of them coming in the last seven years ... Pepperdine advanced to the Sweet 16 in both 2002 and 2005 ... The Waves also captured a share of the 2002 WCC title.
THE WAVES’ TRI-CAPTAINS: For 2008, the team captains are junior goalkeeper Kayla Stolte, senior midfielder Ashley Copp and junior forward Courtney Price ... The tri-captains were voted to their current position by their teammates just weeks before the start of the 2008 spring season ... Their leadership helped the Waves rebound from a disappointing 5-8-6 record in 2007, by guiding the club to an 8-1 mark against its exhibition opponents.
PRIZED RECRUITS: Pepperdine’s recruiting class was ranked 34th in the nation (out of 320 programs) and ninth in the West Region (out of 49 teams) by Soccer Buzz Magazine ... Head coach Tim Ward’s 2008 recruiting class includes Soccer Buzz Top 100 recruit and defender Kelsea Smith as well as Top 200 recruits forward Laura Cole and defender/midfielder Myriah Stockman ... As a conference, the WCC ranked fourth (out of 31) in the Soccer Buzz conference team rankings behind only the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-10.
ROUGH ROAD AHEAD: Pepperdine’s schedule is a major challenge once again in 2008 as the Waves match up with five nationally ranked opponents and six NCAA Tournament participants from 2007 ... Pepperdine’s 20-match slate includes preseason #2 UCLA and #13 Tennessee in addition to WCC rivals #6 Portland, #22 Santa Clara and #25 San Diego ... The Waves’ 2008 opponents combined for an overall win-loss record of 209-144-49 in 2007, equaling an impressive .581 winning percentage.
TICKETS: Single-match tickets to all home women’s soccer games are $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors and free to all Pepperdine students and faculty with an university ID.
