MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine men’s volleyball team’s run through the 2008 postseason has been nominated as one of the “Greatest Sports Moments of 2008” by the Los Angeles Sports Council, and fans now have the opportunity to decide the winners in 18 different categories through an on-line voting process.
In the “Division I Schools” category, which includes all of the local schools except for USC and UCLA, the Pepperdine men’s volleyball team is up against Cal State Fullerton’s men’s basketball team and the UC Irvine men’s soccer team.
The text on the L.A. Sports Council’s website about the Waves’ accomplishment reads: “The Pepperdine men's volleyball team made it to the NCAA Championships final the hard way. In the qualifying MPSF Tournament they defeated higher-seeded teams from UCLA, Long Beach State and BYU, fighting off a match point to defeat BYU in a five-game final as senior All-American Jonathan Winder was named tournament MVP. One week later in Irvine, the Waves had to beat Long Beach State again in the NCAA semifinals, their run finally ending in the national championship match in a four-game loss to top-ranked Penn State (April 24-May 3).”

The awards show will air on FSN Prime Ticket.
