British Columbia Tops No. 14 Pepperdine 4-1 in Exhibition

Malibu, Calif. - Sophomore left-hander Shawn Shaefer limited a Pepperdine offense comprised mostly of reserves to two-hits over seven innings and senior right fielder Jeff Tobin went 4-for-4 to lead the University of British Columbia to a 4-1 victory over the 14th-ranked Waves in an exhibition game Wednesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
In his seven innings of Shaefer allowed a pair of hits, walked two and struck out two to help the Thunderbirds improve to 3-4 on the season. British Columbia is currently on California tour play teams throughout the Southland.
British Columbia scored three times with two out in the second inning against Pepperdine starter Robert Della Grotta. The big hit in the inning was a two-run double by Tobin.
The Thunderbirds scored an unearned run against Waves right hander Dylan Gonzalez in the fifth inning.
Pepperdine's lone run came in the fifth inning on a two-out single by freshman left fielder Tony Asaro.
The Waves used seven pitchers in the contest as Della Grotta, freshman Bryce Stowell, sophomores Dylan Gonzalez, Nick Gaudi, Jason Dominguez, Brian Ozols and senior Bryan Minkel all worked in the game.
Pepperdine returns to action on Friday when it hosts No. 2 Oregon State at Eddy D. Field Stadium beginning at 2 p.m.
