Malibu, Calif. - The No. 9 Pepperdine women's soccer team topped UNLV 1-0 Friday afternoon in front of a home crowd at Tari Frahm Rokus Field. The win improves the Waves' record to 7-0-1, while the Rebels fell to 3-3-3 on the season.
The two teams were evenly matched as they played to a 0-0 tie after the first half. UNLV had numerous chances to capitalize off of five corner kicks, but the Waves defended the goal, while senior goalkeeper Anna Picarelli came up with some big grabs in the net.
Pepperdine came out strong in the second half as they dominated the Rebels' defense. Freshman midfielder Emily Wynne put Pepperdine on the board when she scored from the left side, 15 yards out at the 57:49 mark. Jenna Fodor and Samantha Hire were credited with the assists. UNLV had a chance to tie the match as it tried to take advantage of a corner kick in the last minute of the game, but Pepperdine kept the Rebels out of the box to secure the victory.
The Waves out-shot UNLV 16-13 including seven shots on goal. Picarelli had five saves and picked up her third shutout for the season.
Pepperdine faces Denver on Sunday, September 23 at home for a 1 p.m. contest.
