Pepperdine Men Place Sixth, Women Seventh at WCC Championships

Senior Chad Trammell turned in a seventh-place finish to help the Pepperdine men's cross country team place sixth at the West Coast Conference (WCC) Championships that were conducted at the Crystal Springs Course in Belmont, California. Freshman Sarah Camp was the top finisher on the women's side to lead the Waves to a seventh-place showing.

Portland continued its run of success at the WCC Cross Country Championships by capturing both the men's titles. The men's squad claimed its 27th straight conference crown, while the women's team took first place for the ninth time in 10 years.

Six Portland runners posted Top 10 finishes to lead the Pilots' men's squad to the team title. Individual champion Matt Sheeks led the way, recording a time of 25:36 to become the 27th straight Portland harrier to take first place at the WCC Championship.

Brett Carter, the 2003 WCC individual champion, finished in second place for the second straight season and Colin Longmuir notched a third place finish with a time of 25:41 in the eight-kilometer race. Matt Perez and Michael Haugen finished fifth and eighth, respectively, and Steve Vandenburg placed 10th overall for the Pilots.

Trammell continued his solid season for the Waves as he turned in a time of 26:02.

In the women's race, Portland won its fourth straight WCC title with a team score of 31. The Pilots' Ashlee Vincent captured the women's race with a 17:59 mark on the five-kilometer course, marking the eighth fastest time in WCC Championship history. Teammate Kathy Rice captured third place, finishing with a time of 18:15.

Santa Clara's Shannon Bell turned in a time of 18:10 to finish second while Gonzaga's Jill Demenza (18:16) and San Diego's Tiffanie Marley (18:20) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Camp topped the Waves with a time of 19:26 to finish 26th.

Both the Pepperdine men's and women's teams will be off for two weeks before traveling to the Bay Area to compete at the NCAA West Regional Championship on the Stanford campus.
