MALIBU, Calif. -- For the third time in their collegiate career, Pepperdine's Fred Winters and Sean Rooney were named All-MPSF First-Team, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) announced today. The Waves' leading middle blocker, Andy Hein, earned Honorable Mention distinctions.
Brigham Young University's starting setter, Carlos Moreno, was tabbed the MPSF Player of the Year. Evan Patak from UC Santa Barbara earned Freshman of the Year honors, and UC San Diego head coach, Ron Larsen, was selected the Coach of the Year.
2004 MPSF PLAYER of the YEAR
CARLOS MORENO, #5, Junior, Setter - Brigham Young University CARLOS MORENO, 6-4, Junior, Sao Paulo Brazil - Moreno recorded 1,414 assists this season giving him the No. 2 rank in the nation with a 14.0 assists per game average. This year, Carlos started at setter in 101 of the Cougars' 105 games, leading BYU to a 24-4 overall record and a 20-2 MPSF finish, including a 21-match win streak, with the Cougars holding the No. 1 national ranking for seven straight weeks. Carlos earned AVCA National Player of the Week honors after leading the Cougars to back-to-back wins over Pepperdine, recording a season-high 77 assists on March 13. Moreno moved into third place on BYU's career assist list this season and needs only 26 more to become BYU's second all-time assist leader, while tallying 4,353 thus far. In 2003, he earned Second-Team All-America and All-MPSF honors while recording 1567 assists, the second-highest in BYU history. As a freshman starter in 2002, Moreno played in 97 of 109 games and recorded a career-high 84 assists against No. 6 Stanford in the first round of the MPSF Tournament, setting a BYU assists record. At Singular High School in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Carlos earned MVP honors in 1996, 1997 and 1998, and twice led his high school team to state championship. While playing for the Banespa club team, Moreno earned MVP honors during the team's national championship run. One of six children, Carlos was born on New Year's Day to parents Antonio and Selma Moreno. His twin sister, Anna Laura, plays collegiate volleyball at Oral Roberts University. His father, Antonio, was team captain for the Brazilian National Team at the 1968, 1972, 1976 and 1980 Olympic Games.
2004 MPSF FRESHMAN of the YEAR
EVAN PATAK, #7, Freshman, Opposite - UC Santa Barbara EVAN PATAK, 6-8, Pleasanton, CA, Foothill HS - Patak leads the Gauchos with 500 points, 421 kills, 4.78 kill average, 35 service aces, .40 ace average and is also second on the team with 102 digs, 1.16 dig average. Patak ranks third at UCSB with 77 total blocks, .88 block average. Nationally he ranks fifth in kill average, third in point average, and 12th in ace average, while leading the MPSF in point average (5.79) and kill average (5.04) and ranking fourth in ace average (.393). Evan was named MPSF and AVCA Player of the Week for March 2. A redshirt in 2003, Patak played middle and opposite at Foothill High School where he was the 2002 league MVP, while also garnering first-team all-league honors in 2001 and 2000. In high school, Patak had a single-game high of 52 kills and 18 blocks. Last summer Evan played for the U.S. Team in the World University Games where he helped lead Team USA to the bronze medal and was the tournament scoring leader. Evan was born June 23, 1984, to father Kim and mother Gloria O'Brien Patak. He currently is an undeclared major.
2004 MPSF COACH of the YEAR
RON LARSEN, 4th Season - UC San Diego UC San Diego Head Coach RON LARSEN just concluded his fourth season at the helm of the men's volleyball team producing a 8-21-0 record including a team-record four MPSF conference wins during the 2004 season, with victories over USC, Stanford, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara. Recognizing him for his efforts, MPSF men's volleyball coaches voted Larsen 2004 Coach of the Year. Larsen came to UCSD in 2000, the Tritons' final year in NCAA Division III, and led the team to the NCAA Division III Invitational National Championship, while recording the most wins (nine) for a Triton team in 10 seasons. He also led the team to its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory that year in three seasons while competing as the only Division II, non-scholarship program in the nation's toughest men's volleyball conference. Larsen came to UCSD from the University of Rutgers-Newark where he served as men's and women's varsity coach from 1993-1998. At Rutgers-Newark, he was named New Jersey Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1996 and 1998, and Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Coach of the Year in 1998. Larsen began his coaching career began at Cal, where he led the Bears' men's volleyball club team to a 102-29 record between 1980 to 1984, and again from 1987 to 1989. He also served as assistant coach of the women's volleyball team at St. Mary's College from 1987 to 1988, before moving on to UC Davis in 1989 where he served as assistant women's coach for four seasons. Larsen coached the North Men's Team to a silver medal at the 1995 USA Olympic Festival and also coached the 1996 USA Boys' Youth National Team, featuring the nation's top 18 high school players.
