From the 2016 Hall of Fame program:

Scott Doerner holds the distinction of being the #1 player on Pepperdine’s 2006 NCAA championship-winning men’s tennis team and is certainly one of the program’s all-time greats.

A native of Melbourne, Australia, Doerner came to Pepperdine in the fall of 2002 as an acclaimed junior tennis player, having won Australian U-16 grass court and clay court championships and becoming the nation’s top-ranked junior.

Doerner had a terrific four years, including All-American status and WCC Player of the Year recognition as both a junior and senior. He made the All-WCC first team in both singles and doubles three times each.

He saw most of his action at #4 singles and #2 doubles as a freshman and sophomore, then moved to the #1 spot for both in his final two years.

During the team’s 2006 national championship run, Doerner made the NCAA All-Tournament team in doubles along with partner Andre Begemann. Then, Doerner and Begemann would make it all the way to the championship match in the NCAA Doubles Tournament before falling.

Doerner and Begemann earned ITA All-American status in doubles thanks to their strong postseason and a final national ranking of #2. The pairing posted an overall record of 33-6. Doerner also collected All-American honors in singles and ended the season ranked #14 nationally. Doerner and Begemann were rated #1 in the country at one point, and Doerner ranked as high as #4 in singles.

Playing with Pedro Rico in 2005, the duo earned All-American honors with a #12 national doubles ranking. Doerner was rated #36 in singles as a junior.

The Waves had a great four-year run with Doerner, winning WCC titles all four seasons, playing in the NCAA Tournament all four years and posting an overall record of 96-25 (.793), including a school-record 36 victories during the national championship season. The Waves reached the NCAA quarterfinals and finished with a #5 national ranking in 2005, and made it to the NCAA’s second round in both 2003 and 2004.

Doerner earned an ITA Regional John Van Nostrand Memorial Award in 2006, which goes to an outstanding senior.

He graduated from Pepperdine in 2006 with a degree in international business. He was also a standout in the classroom, earning WCC All-Academic status three times.

Doerner played professionally for a year, but wasn’t gone from Pepperdine for long, coming back as a volunteer assistant with the men. He then moved over to the women’s team, becoming an assistant coach during the 2007-08 campaign. With Doerner on staff for six seasons, the Waves won four WCC Tournament titles and the first two ever contested WCC regular-season crowns. The Waves advanced to the NCAA Tournament all six years. He was named the ITA Southwest Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2013.

He and his brother Austin have won six U.S. Open doubles titles in the sport of paddle tennis.

Doerner currently works with Marcus & Millichap Commercial Real Estate. He married former Portland women’s tennis player Anna Gullickson in 2014.
