OMAHA, Neb. - The Pepperdine women's volleyball team (3-1) dropped the first of its three matches at the Bluejay Invitational, falling 3-1 to the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes (4-0).

"Tulsa came out and played some really good volleyball from start to finish, and were a very tough opponent," said Head Coach Scott Wong. "I thought we did some nice things to compete but they were just a little more consistent than we were tonight."

Pepperdine led 5-3 early in the first set before Tulsa responded with a 4-1 spurt following a Chloe Pravednikov service error. Both teams would ride the seesaw for a while after that, but the Golden Hurricanes seemed to be pulling away following a Lexi Dahl service ace, going up 16-12. The Waves answered triumphantly and would soon command a 19-18 lead following a Maegan Mills attack error. Pepperdine seemed to knock on the door of a 1-0 match advantage, leading 23-21 after Pravednikov and Ella Piskorz tallied a block. Tulsa would find another gear and rally, knotting the set at 24 before ending it with a Campbell Hague kill, stealing the first set 26-24.

In set two, it was another tug-of-war battle. Tulsa was looking like they'd run away with it, going up 14-10 after Ryan Gilhooly served the ball into the net. The Waves had everyone fooled again as Pepperdine pulled back within one at 17-16 after Pravednikov charted another kill. That ended up being the Waves' best shot as Tulsa distanced themselves, clinching the set after Laine Briggs committed a service error.

Things were trending in the right direction for Pepperdine in the third set, blitzing the Golden Hurricanes to a 12-4 lead. After a Nikol Dvornikova kill, five of the next six Waves points would come via a Tulsa attack error. Pepperdine never let the Golden Hurricanes get within an arms distance and sprinted to a 25-16 win, climbing back in the match now down 2-1.

The match went back to its close ways in the fourth, with Tulsa taking a 12-11 lead following an Isabella Ocampo kill. The Golden Hurricanes took over from there, ending the set and the match with a 13-9 run punctuated by another Ocampo kill as Pepperdine fell three sets to one.

GAME NOTES

Piskorz led all players with 11 kills and 15.5 points.
Briggs' 21 digs led all Waves.
Tulsa had an edge over Pepperdine in digs (51-49), assists (44-43), kills (49-45), and aces (9-5).
