Nicole (Sanderson) Hannan had one of the top careers in Pepperdine women’s volleyball history, and has also been a force on the beach for her native Australia.

In her four seasons (1994-97) with the Waves, she earned All-Pacific Region honors as a senior and became one of the first players in conference history to earn All-West Coast Conference first team honors four times. She helped the Waves to postseason appearances in 1995 (NIVC Tournament) and 1997 (NCAA Tournament).

She led the Waves in kills all four seasons, including a school-record 615 in 1995, and also holds the career record for kills with 2,028. Other school records held include career kills per set (4.71), service aces (147), points (2,380.5) and points per set (5.52). She also holds the school single-season records for kills per set (5.57 in 1996), service aces (62 in 1997) and points (718.5 in 1995), and the school single-match records for kills (36 vs. UC Santa Barbara in 1996) and service aces (10 vs. Santa Clara in 1994).

Sanderson graduated from Pepperdine in 1997 with a degree in sports medicine.

She competed at the 2004 Sydney Olympics for her native Australia and finished fourth in Beach Volleyball with partner Natalie Cook.

The duo won a bronze medal for Australia at the 2003 World Championships. They won a bronze medal at the Osaka Open, where Sanderson also won the SWATCH Fastest Serve Award with a time of 77.7 km/h. At the end of the 2003 season, Sanderson and Cook finished with a #4 overall world ranking on the FIVB World Tour. In 2004, they won the Australian National Championships and a silver medal at the FIVB Osaka Open. Sanderson was named the 2004-05 AVF Most Outstanding Female Beach Volleyball Player. In 2007, she and partner Summer Lochowicz were the Australian National Tour Champions.

She and Steve Hannan were married in 2007 and now live in Hawaii. She is currently working in sales and marketing for LM Investment Management Ltd. She is also working towards a bachelor’s of health science degrees in naturopathy and Chinese acupuncture.Â
