Hall of Fame
From the 2015 Hall of Fame program:
One of the top big men in the history of Pepperdine men’s basketball, Levy Middlebrooks is the only Wave in the last 37 seasons to average a double-double over the course of the entire season.
Â
Middlebrooks had an All-American high school career at St. Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco, where he was also the 1984 CIF Central Coast Player of the Year, before arriving at Pepperdine in the fall of 1984.
Â
He won a starting position as a freshman post player, and never gave it up. Middlebrooks started 121 games in his career, a school record.
Â
For his career, Middlebrooks also amassed totals of 1,548 points (which ranked third in school history when he finished and is now seventh), 972 rebounds and 1,147 minutes played (both of which were school records and now rank second).
Â
He would be named the West Coast Conference’s Player of the Year in 1988 after a marvelous senior season in which he averaged 19.6 points and 10.7 rebounds. Those figures were fourth and first in the WCC, respectively. He had 19 double-doubles in 30 games that season, another school record, as was his average of 38.2 minutes per game.
Â
Middlebrooks had one of the greatest single-game performances in school history when he put together a 40-point, 25-rebound effort against Loyola Marymount on February 20, 1988. Unfortunately, the Waves came out on the short end of the highest-scoring game in school history, a 142-127 defeat.
Â
The Waves had a terrific four years with Middlebrooks in the middle, going 77-45 overall (.631). Pepperdine won WCC titles and made NCAA Tournament appearances in both 1985 and 1986, and also went to the NIT in 1988.
Â
He also earned All-WCC first team honors as a junior in 1987. He averaged 13.3 points (eighth in the league) and 9.0 rebounds (first in the league). After the season, he went on a trip to Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union with Athletes in Action.
Â
The 6-foot-7 Middlebrooks ranked among the WCC’s top rebounders all four years, finishing eighth as a sophomore (6.2) and 10th as a freshman (6.4). Middlebrooks also earned the WCC’s Freshman of the Year award in 1985 after averaging 10.3 points.
Â
The WCC Tournament was established in 1987, and Middlebrooks earned spots on the All-Tournament team each of the first two years. He averaged 16.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in five career games, which included 18 points and 11 rebounds in the 1987 semifinals against San Diego, 22 points and 10 rebounds in the 1988 first round against Gonzaga and 17 points and 13 rebounds in the 1988 semifinals against Loyola Marymount.
Â
Middlebrooks graduated from Pepperdine in 1989 with a degree in communications. Surprisingly, he wasn’t taken in the 1988 NBA Draft, but he carved out a professional career that lasted 11 years and took him to the Continental Basketball League, Mexico, Spain, Cyprus, Macedonia and Japan.
Â
Middlebrooks, who has one child (Levy Jr.), works as a licensed insurance agent and broker at For Every Season Insurance, and has also served at-risk youth as a counselor and teacher for multiple organizations.
