Hall of Fame
From the 2014 Hall of Fame program:
The first-ever recipient of the prestigious Byron Nelson Award, Jason Allred had an outstanding four seasons at Pepperdine and has hit his stride in professional golf as well.
A top recruit from Ashland (Oregon) High School, Allred arrived at Pepperdine with such accolades as a victory at the 1997 U.S. Junior Championships and a third-place result at the 1997 Junior World Championships.
Allred entered Pepperdine in the fall of 1998 and the Waves won West Coast Conference titles all four years with him in the lineup. The team advanced to the NCAA Championships twice, finishing in a tie for 23rd place in 2000 and eighth place in 2002. Allred tied for 63rd individually at the 2002 NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, and posted three top-three finishes at the WCC Championships.
He was in the lineup all four seasons, competing in 53 tournaments and playing 156 rounds (a number that ranks fourth in Pepperdine school history). He figures prominently in many more of the school’s career records, including fifth in scoring average (73.11). Allred is one of just six Pepperdine men’s golfers to make the All-WCC first team all four years.
Allred was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America’s (GCAA) All-American third team as a 2001-02 senior. His scoring average that season of 72.33 was the second-best in school history at the time and currently ranks eighth. He led the team with nine top-20 finishes that year, including a win at the Club Glove Intercollegiate and a second-place finish at the WCC Championships. He ended up 45th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
He also earned a major prize given for the first time in 2002: the Byron Nelson Award. Presented to a graduating senior by the GCAA, the honor takes into account a nominee’s entire academic career, college golf career and his character and integrity while in college.
Allred, who graduated in 2002 with a degree in speech communications, was a GCAA All-American Scholar in both 2001 and 2002, and collected WCC All-Academic honors all four seasons. He was named Pepperdine Athletics’ Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2002 and was a leader in the Pepperdine Christian student-athlete group, “The Goal.”
After Pepperdine, Allred reached golf’s highest level when he earned PGA Tour cards in 2005 and 2008. Other years, he competed in golf’s minor leagues.
In 2014, despite not having the benefit of a PGA Tour card, Allred has posted a remarkable year. It began in February, when he earned a spot in the Northern Trust Open at nearby Riviera Country Club through qualifying. He then played his way to a third-place finish (and a $388,600 check, more than he had made for his entire professional career to that point).
Through a mixture of qualifying and sponsor’s exemptions, he went on to play at eight other PGA events. Strong results, including sixth place at the Barracuda Championship and 15th at The Memorial Tournament, nearly put him into a position to automatically earn a 2015 PGA Tour Card despite his limited schedule.
He and his wife Kimberly (a fellow Pepperdine graduate who played one season of basketball) live in Scottsdale, Arizona, with their three children: Annie, Zane and Lucy.
