From the 2017 Hall of Fame program:
Only two women’s tennis players in Pepperdine’s history have earned All-American honors all four seasons, and Angela (Lawrence) Hendy is the most recent to have achieved this status.
A highly ranked junior player from Kingsgrove, Australia, Lawrence won the 1994 U-18 Australian Hardcourt Championship, among other honors and victories, before arriving at Pepperdine in the fall of 1995.
Lawrence picked up all of her Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American accolades in doubles, teaming with Isabela Petrov in 1996 and 1997, then Zsofia Csapo in 1998 and Ipek Senoglu in 1999. Janna Kovacevich (1988-1991) was the first Wave to earn four-time All-American honors.
Lawrence’s final national ITA rankings in doubles were #5 in 1996, #10 in 1997, #10 in 1998 and #7 in 1999. She played in the NCAA Doubles Tournament all four years, making the quarterfinals in 1996 and 1999, the round of 16 in 1997 and the first round in 1998. She and her partner were seeded in the top eight of the tournament in 1996, 1997 and 1999.
She played #1 doubles on the ladder all four years. Her four-year record in doubles play during dual matches was 62-14 (.816), with her best single-season mark of 21-4 coming with Csapo in 1998. Lawrence and Petrov had a record of 24-5 (.828) over their two seasons, ranking third in career-winning percentage and tied for seventh in total wins in the Pepperdine record book.
Lawrence also picked up All-West Coast Conference first team doubles honors in 1997, 1998 and 1999. She and Csapo won the doubles title at the 1997 Riviera All-American Championships.
While her greatest honors came in doubles, Lawrence was also an accomplished singles player with the Waves. Her end-of-season national ITA rankings in singles were 25th in 1999, 30th in 1998 and 43rd in 1996. She played in three NCAA Singles Tournaments and advanced to the second round in both 1998 and 1999.
Lawrence played #1 singles as a senior and for part of her junior season. Her four-year dual-match record was 57-27 (.679). She made the All-WCC singles team in both 1998 and 1999.
During her four seasons, she helped Pepperdine to an 84-27 overall record (.757), four WCC Tournament titles and three appearances in the NCAA Round of 16. The Waves’ final national team rankings those four years were 13th, 14th, 13th and eighth.
Lawrence graduated from Pepperdine in 1999 summa cum laude with a degree in business administration. She was a four-time WCC All-Academic selection.
After graduation, Lawrence did some coaching at nearby Sherwood Country Club before returning home to Australia, where she worked with Yahoo! Search Marketing. She has spent the last 12 years working for Google, including the last three in the company’s office in San Francisco, California.
She continues to play tennis with the San Francisco Olympic Club, and her team was the runner-up at the 2016 national tournament.
She and her husband, James Hendy, live in Tiburon, California, with their two sons, J.J. and Luke.
