Baseball Completes Sweep of Portland on Mother's Day

"What a great way to finish off a fantastic weekend!" commented Head Coach Tyler LaTorre. "We celebrated so many wonderful Mothers in attendance on the field before the game and celebrated after the game with a series sweep. Our pitching staff continued to pitch well, starting with Collin Valentine, who pitched wonderfully in our final home game of the 2026 season. Dylan Stewart and Luncien Wechsberg, like Friday, came in and slammed the door to secure the 3-0 weekend. We set the tone early offensively with a great at bat by senior Julian Nunez, playing in his final game on campus. With Nunez on first, Josh Woodworth got a hold of one to left for a no-doubter."
The Waves clinched a spot in the WCC tournament and gained steam in the conference standings, getting help from Gonzaga and San Diego. The Bulldogs downed San Francisco again, 12-5, giving Pepperdine a two-game cushion over the Dons (who have the tiebreaker over the Waves). A major story developed in Stockton in the early evening hours, as Pacific and San Diego's contest ended in an 11-11 tie following the final out in the bottom of the eighth. Both squads had agreed to a time constraint surrounding San Diego's departing flight before the contest started. Due to the tie, Pepperdine holds a half-game advantage over Pacific and is suddenly in the driver's seat for the number two seed.
Back at Eddy D. Field Stadium, the Waves were taking care of their own business. Joshua Woodworth started the scoring in the bottom of the first, saying goodbye to a center-cut fastball for a two-run homer, putting him atop the team leaderboard in that category and the Waves out in front 2-0. Starting pitcher Collin Valentine worked around several jams to get through the first three innings relatively unscathed, surrendering just one run.
Pepperdine gave him some padding with a three-run fourth inning. Trey Dunn, Kai Laxa, and James Dell'Amico (RBI single) all had base hits to open the frame before Danny Cook brought in Laxa on a sac fly to extend the lead to 4-1. A few batters later and with two outs, Shawn Romero ripped a RBI single down the left field line to plate Dell'Amico, and the Waves held a 5-1 advantage headed to the fifth. It is HIGH, it is FAR, it is GONE‼️ A Woodworthian home run for @15jwood, his team-leading 10th tank of the year!

"Up and down the lineup we saw productive team at bats that allowed us to extend the lead," added LaTorre. "We have really put together a great second half of the season. It is a treatment to our players' trust in our process and culture. They finally began to see the results on the scoreboard and they built belief each and every day."
Carter Stewart sent a RBI single to left field in the sixth to get Portland back within a field goal at 5-2. LaTorre went to the bullpen in the seventh and Dylan Stewart tossed two hitless innings before Lucien Wechsberg slammed the door in the ninth. The duo combined to hold the Pilots to 1-for-9 with a walk, hit by pitch, and a single as the Waves won their third contest in a row.
"As we go into our final weekend series at Santa Clara, I am excited to see our players continue to build confidence in their own abilities, as well as our team concepts that have led to this impressive turnaround," said LaTorre.
GAME NOTES
- Woodworth extended his hitting streak to 14 consecutive games and has reached base in 20 straight contests. He's hitting .410 (25-for-61) in his last 14 games and paces Pepperdine with 32 RBI.
- Wechsberg's save was his 10th of the year, extending his career year.
- Each squad left eight on base.
