4/22/2026 2:10:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
PROVO, Utah – The No. 4 Pepperdine men's volleyball team (23-5, 13-1 MPSF) swept the Warriors of Jessup (11-16, 5-9 MPSF) to advance to the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament Wednesday morning.
"I'm glad we won this morning and advanced to tomorrow," head coach Jonathan Winder said. "Not perfect today, but we found some different ways to be good and make some plays to win down the stretch. It was huge that Zach [Chapin] came in to score some pivotal points for us in the third set."
Pepperdine's most dominant win of the morning came in set one. Jose Gomez led the Waves notching six kills without a single error. Noe Matthey had the sole service ace of the day for Pepperdine while the defense shined, posting three blocks in the match opener. Ryan Barnett ended the set with a kill from Andrej Polomac to secure a 25-19 victory.
Both teams evenly split 22 kills in the second with 11 a piece. Barnett and Cole Hartke split the top-spot with three a piece in the closer set as the Warriors continued to put up a fight. Jacob Reilly was targeted the most down the stretch with six receptions. Despite four ties, the lead never left the Waves side, leading by as many as four throughout. Cole Hartke ended the set with a kill as Pepperdine took a 2-0 match advantage with a 21-25 win.
The Waves played Jessup the closest in the third with seven different ties. For the first time all afternoon, the Warriors took a lead at 14-13 halfway through the final set. Leading by as many as three, it was Gomez and Zach Chapin behind the service line who would give Pepperdine the lead late to propel the Waves to a sweep. Barnett and Noe hit a perfect 1.00 with six and four kills, respectively, to lead the team to a 25-22 set win and 3-0 match victory.
Advancing to the first game of the semifinals tomorrow, the Waves will play No. 5 USC for the third time in a week's span. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT. The match will be available to stream on B1G+ (subscription required). Live stats will be available at www.pepperdinewaves.com.
