SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The regular season closed out on a high note for No. 28 Pepperdine men's tennis (16-8, 6-1 WCC), defeating UC Santa Barbara (16-7, 5-1 Big West) by a final of 4-2.
"Strong performance to wrap up our regular season," said Director of Tennis Adam Schaechterle. "I felt coming into the match UCSB's strongest spots might be doubles, and 1/2 singles. We dominated those three positions. We know Ed is one of the best players in college tennis, and it was great to see him playing his confident, aggressive identity today. He was excellent through the first point of doubles to the last point of singles. Excited to attack the postseason with this group."
The Waves jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after clinching the doubles point, which proved to be a big part of the win. Edward Winter and David Fix defeated the No. 55-ranked duo of Miguel Avendano and Lucca Liu in commanding fashion, 6-2. Not long after, Gustavo Ribeiro de Almeida and Lasse Poertner took down Dominique Rolland and Conrad Brown by the same score, 6-2.
On two, Lasse Poertner responded with a win over the No. 57-ranked Rolland (6-3, 6-0).
Edward Winter put UCSB on the ropes with a straight-sets win over No. 89 Lucca Liu (6-1, 6-4), extending Pepperdine's lead to 3-1.
Charlie Underwood helped the Gauchos climb back into it with a straight-sets victory over Almeida (6-4, 6-4).
As he's done several times just recently, it was Fix on flight six who clinched the winning point for the Waves, finishing off UCSB with a win over Karel Fromel. Fix fought back from a 4-6 defeat in set one to win 12 of the last 17 games (4-6, 6-1, 6-4) and send Pepperdine into the postseason with a two-match winning streak.
