FAIRFIELD, Calif. - It'll come down to one match for all the marbles for No. 27 Pepperdine men's tennis (17-8, 6-1 WCC), as the Waves broke out the brooms against the Santa Clara Broncos (20-4, 6-1 WCC) in a 4-0 victory in the WCC semifinals.
Â
Pepperdine will face number one-seed San Diego in the Championship match at 10 a.m. PT Saturday.
Â
"This is the best time of year," said Director of Tennis, Adam Schaechterle, following the match. "The boys put in the work, and now it's time to compete with full confidence. We get to face a great opponent for a title. Doesn't get any better!"
Â
The Waves jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after winning the doubles point. David Fix and Edward Winter teamed up to take down the 63rd-ranked duo of Luca Bluett and John Kim, a combination Pepperdine handled just a few weeks ago in the regular season. Freshman Gustavo Ribeiro de Almeida and Lasse Poertner clinched the point on flight two with a 6-3 win over Tiago Boschmans and Luca Lemaitre.
Â
Moving to singles, Almeida carried over the momentum from doubles with a straight set win over Lukas Maskow (6-2, 6-2).
Â
On flight five, senior Maxi Homberg extended the lead to 3-0 with a straight-sets victory over Valentin Faure (6-3, 6-1). The Freising, Germany native went unbeaten in WCC singles matches in the regular season, which included a straight-sets win on April 9 against Faure.
Â
The other trio of singles matches were abandoned, with the Waves in control of two of the three. Poertner was down 3-4 in set two after falling the opening set versus Luca Lemaitre. On the other side of the fence, Aleksa Pisaric defeated John Kim 6-3 and went unfinished before the second set began, while David Fix held a 2-1 advantage in set two over Ferran Redza after defeating him in set one, 7-5.
