SAN DIEGO — No. 29 Pepperdine men's tennis (14-8, 5-1 WCC) fell by a score of 4-1 at No. 16 San Diego (18-4, 6-0 WCC) Sunday afternoon from Hogan Tennis Center.
The Waves fell behind after dropping the doubles point, as the Toreros were able to finish the job in singles, with Maxi Homberg earning the lone singles victory for Pepperdine on the day.
"The doubles got away from us early, and it's tough to give that away so quickly in a road battle for the regular season title," said Director of Tennis/Head Coach Adam Schaechterle following the match. "I'm proud of how the boys responded and settled into their singles matches. It was a great effort from all six."
The match saw both teams enter with an undefeated record in WCC play this season, essentially deciding the regular season championship, with just one conference match now remaining for both sides.
"Congrats to San Diego and their coaching staff," continued Schaechterle. "Their seniors have been great competitors within the conference and on the national stage. We look forward to the rematch at the conference tournament in a couple weeks."
Beginning with doubles, San Diego earned a 6-1 win on court two before clinching the point on court three with a 6-3 victory.Â
Lasse Poertner and Aleksa Pisaric went unfinished on court one.
Moving to singles, San Diego then took a 2-0 lead as Poertner retired in set two.Â
The Toreros then got out to a 3-0 advantage with a win on court four, as Gustavo Ribeiro de Almeida was edged in a second set tiebreak.
Homberg got the Waves on the board, defeating Lambert Ruland, 7-5, 7-6, to make it a 3-1 scoreline. Homberg has now won five straight singles decisions, and currently boasts a 4-0 mark in conference play this season.
San Diego was able to clinch the match soon after, as No. 21 Oliver Tarvet picked up the two-set win on court one, as Edward Winter was on the wrong side of the first set tiebreak.Â
Pisaric saw his match abandoned on court three while ahead 5-0 in the third set, after winning the first set 6-4.
David Fix also went unfinished on court six in the midst of a third set. Fix had won the opening set 7-5, before Neo Niedner responded with a 6-4 win in the second set.
