No. 5 Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Stanford in First of Two Matches
4/10/2026 9:32:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
MALIBU, Calif. – The No. 5 Pepperdine men's volleyball team (19-5, 10-1 MPSF) took the match against Stanford (9-13, 6-5 MPSF) in three straight sets Friday night in Malibu.
"Our guys kept lots of pressure on Stanford tonight from serve and attack," head coach Jonathan Winder said. "It was great to sustain that level of offense and serving tonight. There was a great atmosphere again in Firestone and the guys played with passion tonight. We get to turn around and bring it again tomorrow."
Hitting .580 through the three sets, Pepperdine was locked in offensively all night. Jose Gomez led the team with 14 kills, followed closely by the duo of Ryan Barnett and Cole Harke, who had 13 apiece.
Set one saw the longest service run from Barnett as he brought the Waves even with the Cardinal after the visitors got out to a hot 8-4 start over Pepperdine. Stanford committed a night-high seven errors through the opening set as the Waves never let the lead up after reclaiming it at 11-10. An attack error on the Cardinal side ended the first with the Waves taking the 1-0 advantage after the 25-20 win.
Gomez and Hartke both recorded five kills in the second set as the Waves reclaimed their serve, recording the first service aces of the night. Hartke, Barnett, and Gomez all tallied an ace as the three of them led Pepperdine to a .500 hitting percentage and a 25-19 win over the Cardinal. A monster 4.5 blocks through the set were split between four waves as Hartke had the only solo stuff with James Eadie getting a hand in three separate blocks.
Taking the lead from the jump in the third and final set, the Waves never took their foot off the gas. Barnett recorded a set-high seven kills for the team as he led the Waves in accuracy tonight, hitting a surreal .706. The night ended on three kills between Barnett and Hartke as No. 5 Pepperdine swept No. 14 Stanford 3-0 Friday night in Firestone Fieldhouse.
Back in Firestone tomorrow night, the Waves host the Cardinal for match two of the weekend for Pepperdine's Faith and Family night. Bring a canned good to be entered into a raffle for prizes as well as discounted admission.
