FRESNO, Calif. — No. 8 Pepperdine women's golf sits in first place with a 24-stroke lead following two rounds of play at the Fresno State Classic from Fort Washington Golf & Country Club Monday.
The Waves posted team scores of +2 and -6 across the 36 holes contested today, as the lone team under par in the tournament at -4.
Cal Poly sits in second place as a team at 20 over. The average round in the morning was a 77.73 with just two rounds going under par. The afternoon saw lower scores around the leaderboard with a 75.42 overall average.
Four Waves sit in the top-seven individually, with
Yingzhi Zhu and
Eunseo Choi sitting in first and second place, respectively.
"The team took away a lot of positives from our two rounds today," noted head coach
Laurie Gibbs. "The course is a good test and it was great to have our whole team competing. The goal tomorrow is for everyone to play their best round."
Yingzhi Zhu holds the individual lead at -4 after recording a career-low 67 in the second round which was also the low round of the day. Zhu sat -3 through 16 holes in the opening round before finishing with a triple bogey and bogey to log a 73. Zhu had registered five birdies in seven holes from 11-17 after beginning her round on the third hole. She went on to post the 5-under 67 in the afternoon with a bogey-free round. Zhu carded an eagle on the 12th to go along with three birdies for the new career-best.
Eunseo Choi sits in second place at -3 for the tournament, having paced the field with a 69 in the opening round as one of two rounds under par in the morning. Choi posted five birdies in the morning to lead at -3, following it up with an even par-72 round in the afternoon. Choi birdied 16 and 18 to close out her second round and move to within one stroke of the individual lead.
Jeneath Wong lands in fifth-place on the individual leaderboard with rounds of 75 and 69 to be even par on the day. Wong was +3 in the morning after making two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey on the round. Her afternoon round saw her card five birdies with just two bogeys to get in with a -3.
Kylee Choi sits in seventh-place individually at +3 through 36 holes. Choi carded a 1-over 73 in the opening round, bookending her round with birdies as two of the three circles on her scorecard came on holes one and 18. Choi followed up with a 74 in the afternoon, rebounding with a birdie on the ninth hole after being three over through seven, and making par on every hole on the back nine.
Grace Anderson posted rounds of 76 and 78 to begin the tournament and now sits in 29th individually heading into tomorrow's final round.
Competing as individuals,
Irene Kim and
Nishna Patel also sit in the top-40 individually for the Waves. Kim went 75-78 on the day to land in 26th at +9, while Patel logged rounds of 80 and 75 to be in 36th at +11.
