SEATTLE, Wash. - Pepperdine women's volleyball (17-4, 9-1 WCC) extended its winning streak to six in a row with a sweep over the Seattle Redhawks on Thursday night.
Â
Mariia Nikol Dvornikova led the Waves with a dozen kills, while Irelynd Lorenzen piled up 10 more. Ella Piskorz, Lorenzen, and Tristen Raymond each had a pair of block assists as the blue and orange held Seattle to a sub-.200 hitting percentage.
Â
In the last 14 matches, Pepperdine has won 13 of them, with seven of those being a sweep.
Â
"We focused on our side and played aggressive throughout the match," said Head Coach Scott Wong. "We were able to make adjustments quickly and efficiently which helped us secure the win."
Â
It was a back-and-forth battle in the opening set before a 4-0 spurt catapulted the Waves to a 10-7 advantage behind kills from Lorenzen and Chloe Pravednikov. However, the Redhawks kept the contest within two points for the majority of the set until Dvornikova caught fire, ripping three consecutive kills to put Pepperdine up 23-18. Maggie Beauer notched a kill and Dvornikova put the finishing touches on a 25-20 set win with a kill.
Â
The third set was a much different story. A seesaw battle started to give way to the Waves as Pepperdine forced an attack error on Seattle's Grace Jones before Dev served up another ace. The Redhawks kept within an arms' length anytime Pepperdine tried to pull away, even after Lorenzen and Raymond had a combo block to extend the lead to 17-14. Hailey McEllrath capped a 3-0 run from Seattle to tie the set up at 19 apiece. Dvornikova and Lorenzen stepped up in a big way down the stretch, combining for four kills as the Waves staved off Seattle's Teagan Melton's set-tying kill that briefly made it 23-all. Lorenzen ultimately hammered the final kill as Pepperdine completed a 3-0 sweep of Seattle.
