MALIBU, Calif. — Both Pepperdine tennis teams finished ranked 25th in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, which were released Wednesday.
Cementing its status as the nation's premier mid-major tennis destination, Pepperdine is the only non-Power-4 school with top-25 men's and women's tennis teams. Additionally, Pepperdine was the only non-Power 4 team to win a match in both the men's and women's NCAA Tournament.
This was the 12th consecutive year the Pepperdine women's tennis team made the top-25 year-end rankings. Playing with as many as five freshmen in the lineup, Interim Head Coach Tassilo Schmid's squad won its 11th straight West Coast Conference Tournament title and made the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Playing a challenging non-conference schedule against 13 NCAA tournament teams, the Waves went 15-12 and notched five wins over Power-4 teams.
As for the men, the Waves had one of their best seasons under Director of Tennis Adam Schaechterle, who guided Pepperdine to its fifth-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Boasting the nation's second-ranked recruiting class, the freshman-heavy Waves went 17-11 — including two wins over top-10 teams — and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in five years. Along the way, Pepperdine beat seven tournament teams, upset No. 9 Columbia and No. 9 Texas A&M at home, plus they beat eventual NCAA quarterfinalist UCLA on the road for the first time since 2006.
The Pepperdine women finished with two nationally ranked singles players and one ranked doubles team. Savannah Broadus led the way at 19th in the nation, while Anastasiia Grechkina finished her debut college tennis season ranked 62nd. NCAA Doubles Tournament qualifiers Broadus and Vivian Yang ended the year ranked 18th in the doubles rankings.
The men's team also had two players and one doubles team in the year-end rankings. Sophomore Edward Winter led the way as the No. 32 singles player in the nation and was the only player to beat NCAA Singles Champion Michael Zheng of Columbia in straight sets. Pepperdine's newest All-American Maxi Homberg, who reached the round of 16 at the fall NCAA Singles Championships, finished the year ranked 94th. The doubles team of Edward and Hugh Winter finished the year ranked 79th in the nation.
Next year, both Pepperdine teams are expected to return several contributors from the 2024-25 campaign.
