Baseball Celebrates Military Day at the Ballpark

MALIBU, Calif.- The Pepperdine baseball team struggled on offense to start, fighting an uphill battle for the majority of the game.
Â
The Waves (4-15) broke the scoring drought in the fourth inning and despite keeping pace with Nebraska on hits 9-11, respectively, the Huskers (8-11) never lost the lead, defeating Pepperdine with a final score of 4-11.
Â
BIG WAVES
Â
Freshman outfielder Joey Damelio (San Mateo, Calif.) hit his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Â
Senior infielder Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa.) knocked in the first runs for the Waves with a team-leading two RBIs in the fourth.
Â
Senior infielder Julian Nunez (Encinitas, Calif.) reached base three times on four plate appearances, including two singles.
Â
RECAP
Â
Strikingly similar to yesterday, the game started with no runs scored on either side. The Huskers scored in the next three innings, taking a 4-0 lead in the middle of the fourth. A single from graduate Nick Upstill (Huntington Beach, Calif.), a Nunez walk, and senior utility player Andrew Savage (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) being hit by a pitch loaded the bases for Conley, who hit two home on the second extra-base hit of the day for the Waves. At the end of four, Pepperdine trailed 4-2.
Â
Nebraska took the four-run lead back immediately, scoring two in the top of the fifth to lead 6-2. The Waves did not respond as the Huskers tacked on another in the sixth, taking a 7-2 advantage.
Â
The next score change would come in the bottom of the seventh when Damelio hit the first home run of his career on a 12-pitch at bat, sending the ball over the left field wall for a single RBI, shrinking the Husker lead to four.
Â
Trading runs in eighth, both squads scored one on two hits for an 8-3 score heading into the ninth and final inning.
Â
In the highest single-inning production for the Huskers, three runs were added in the ninth as Nebraska pulled away 11-4.
Â
Just one baserunner in the bottom half of the inning would not lead to anyone crossing home plate as Pepperdine lost the second game against Nebraska on military appreciation day 4-11.
