SERIES VS. SAN FRANCISCO: Despite an overall record of 42-48 against the Dons, Pepperdine holds the advantage over San Francisco in Malibu with a record of 23-17. This season, the Waves lost the first matchup in San Francisco 60-76. Freshman Chloe Sotell (Samford, Conn.) led the team with 16 points, followed closely behind by senior Makena Mastora (Alameda, Calif.) who had 13. Pepperdine is seeking just their second win against San Francisco in five seasons.
SCOUTING THE DONS: With a 10-12 overall record, including a 7-6 conference record, the Dons sit in seventh in the West Coast Conference. Debora dos Santos, who led her team with 26 points against the Waves, has not played since that game Jan. 4. Senior Freja Werth has since taken over to lead the Dons, averaging 16.3 points per game, shooting .409 from the field and .910 from the charity line. Since last seeing San Francisco a month ago, they have posted a record of 2-6 with wins at home vs. Oregon State and on the road in San Diego. Most recently, the Dons lost at home to Santa Clara Feb. 1 with a score of 50-59.
LAST TIME OUT: On the road in Oregon, the Waves last faced the Portland Pilots Feb. 1. In her best performance of the season, senior Emerita Mashaire (Helsinki, Finland) led the Waves with 12 points. Makena led on the defensive front with four rebounds and senior Megan Harkey (Summerfield, N.C.) dished out a team-high four assists on the night. Keeping in close after one quarter, a 21-17 game quickly unraveled for the Waves as 17 points across two quarters would be an offensive slump heavy enough to drag them out of the game in a 52-76 loss against the Pilots.
IN THE WCC: The sole freshman on the roster appears in multiple categories among the top 25, including points per game (#24), assists per game (#15), assist/turnover ratio (#4) and three's per game (#4). For threes per game, she is fourth amongst all players with an average of 2.0 a game as well as 4th in the same category when just regarding conference games. Senior Makena Mastora is 21st in rebounding for all games with an average of 5.0 a game. On the defensive side of the ball, senior Megan Harkey is 7th in the conference for blocks, averaging 1.1 a game.
SOARING SOTELL: As the only freshman on the team this season, Chloe Sotell is the Waves' leading scorer with 216 total points, serving a crucial role in her inaugural year playing collegiate basketball. Sitting fifth in the conference games with an average of 2.0 threes per game, Chloe is only one of two freshmen in the top 25 across the entire conference. The Connecticut native leads the team with 43 three-pointers, averaging 10.3 points per game over the season.
BREWING WITH BRUBAKER: Tying her highest D-I performance three separate times this season, the senior is having her best year yet with the Waves. Outside of performing offensively as the Waves' second highest scorer this season, the Washington native leads the team with 27 steals this season, adding two last time out against Portland, putting her at 16th in the conference with an average of 1.3 a game.
AT THE HELM: Katie Faulkner is entering her first year as the head coach of the Waves. Previously, Faulkner served as an assistant at the University of Washington for three seasons. During her tenure, Faulkner took Washington to the WNIT Final four in the program's first postseason berth in six years. Prior to joining the Huskies, the Montana alumnae served as an assistant coach at Oregon State from 2016-2021. In those five seasons, the Beavers garnered a 118-37 record while going to the NCAA tournament four years in a row, including a 2018 Elite Eight appearance.
