Waves Set Three Records on Day One of the MPSF Championships

SPOKANE, Wash. — Setting three new school records, the Pepperdine indoor track team wasted no time on day one of the MPSF Championship meet, held at The Podium in Spokane, Wash. on Friday.

Making history as the first points scored at the conference championship meet, Lizzy Crawford lowered her school record in the 5,000 meters and placed sixth with her time of 17:14.16. Senior sprinter Kaley Peterson capped off her indoor track career by setting the school record in the 60-meter dash, breaking an eight-year-old record with her time of 7.64 seconds. Then, the new-look distance medley relay team of Caroline Graham, Lia Cooper, Ashley Eagan and Hannah Bruner broke the school record with their time of 12:11.28.

Running in her final indoor track meet as a Wave, Peterson ran her personal-best time of 7.64 seconds in the first heat of the 60-meter dash. Going into this weekend, Peterson ranked second in program history with a time of 7.75 seconds — a mere four-hundredths of a second behind Izzy Connell's record of 7.72 seconds, which has stood since the program's second year of existence. Peterson finished third in her heat and 14th overall out of 36 runners. She then doubled in the 200-meter dash, running a season-best time of 25.22.

It didn't take long for Crawford to add to the Waves' successful first day. The Pepperdine sophomore positioned herself towards the front of the pack and held steady in the top seven throughout the race. As eventual champion Dani Barrett of UC Davis broke away, Crawford hung with the chase pack throughout the 25-lap race and fended off Hawai'i's Zola O'Donnell down the stretch to finish in 17:14.16. That time doubles as her outright collegiate personal best.

In the last event of the night for the Waves, Graham, Cooper, Eagan and Bruner broke the school record in the distance medley relay in their first race as a team. The Waves were on pace to break the school record of 12:24.86 — which was set at last year's MPSF Championships — for the second half of the race before Bruner sealed the deal. Bruner's closing mile split of 5:06.97 would have broken Pepperdine's school record of 5:10.33; she will run the open mile tomorrow morning.

All told, the Waves recorded eight new top-10 times on Friday.

Currently, Pepperdine is in 10th place with three points in front of Cal State Fullerton and Saint Mary's. The Waves are looking to improve their 11th-place performance from a year ago.

Pepperdine's first event in tomorrow's final day of action is the women's mile, which is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. All pertinent livestream and live stat links can be found on the track team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
