MALIBU, Calif. — Highlighted by David Fix and Gustavo Ribeiro de Almeida's run to the doubles finals, the Pepperdine men's tennis team completed the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regionals, held in Tempe, Ariz. on Tuesday.
Despite sending two doubles teams to the semifinals and Aleksa Pisaric making the singles quarterfinals, Pepperdine did not earn any NCAA Tournament bids after the six-day tournament.
"We had several strong individual performances, but our goal was to make ITA Regionals a team event and make a statement as the strongest team in the Southwest," Pepperdine Director of Tennis Adam Schaechterle said. "UCLA and Arizona performed better than we did, and we fell short of our goal. The guys had a great attitude about learning from the tournament, and I look forward to a productive training block before Sectionals and Conference Masters. Back to work."
Playing in their maiden tournament, Fix and Ribeiro de Almeida made a run to the finals, where they fell to the nation's No. 8 doubles team of Spencer Johnson and Emon van Loben Sels of UCLA.
The Pepperdine underclassmen had a challenging road to the finals: After a routine win against a team from UCLA, Fix and Ribeiro de Almeida needed tiebreaks to beat seeded teams from Arizona State and Arizona to reach the semifinals. There, the Waves faced the unfortunate scenario of playing their teammates, Pisaric and Lasse Poertner, in the semifinals. Pisaric and Poertner were also coming off a tiebreak win in the quarters, this time over UCLA's 5-seeded duo of Rudy Quan and Aadarsh Tripathi. But in the battle of the Waves, Fix and Ribeiro de Almeida prevailed in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, (10-6).
Pisaric led the Waves in singles play by making a run to the quarterfinals, which included the best win of his collegiate career along the way. In the Round of 16, Pisaric won a nailbiter over No. 36 Emon van Loben Sels of UCLA. After dropping the first set 6-2, Pisaric won two tiebreak sets 7-6 (6) and 7-6 (3) to pull off the upset. His reward was facing off with another UCLA Bruin, Rudy Quan, who ended Pisaric's run in a 6-4, 6-0 straight-set win.
Earlier in the singles draw, Poertner and Ribeiro de Almeida made the Round of 16, while Photos Photiades picked up the biggest win of his career by upsetting UCSB's No. 96 Dominique Rolland in the first round. After playing his way through the qualifying draw, Photiades was matched up with the 10-seed Rolland, whom he dispatched in a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 win. He would then lose in the Round of 32.
All told, the Waves went 11-6 in singles and 7-3 in doubles.
The final weekend for Pepperdine to punch its tickets to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship will be Nov. 6-9. The Waves will compete at the ITA Division 1 Sectional Championship, held in Berkeley, Calif., plus the ITA Conference Masters Championship, held in San Diego, Calif.
