Box Score MORAGA, Calif. – The Pepperdine men's basketball team was not able to stop Saint Mary's inside scoring on Thursday evening, resulting in a 71-41 loss for the Waves.
BIG WAVES
- Moe Odum (The Bronx, N.Y./Pacific) led Pepperdine in scoring with 14 on 6-of-11 field goal shooting to go with an assist and a steal.
- Stefan Todorovic (Belgrade, Serbia/SMU/USF) also added 10 points, four rebounds and a steal.
- Boubacar Coulibaly (Bamako, Mali/USC) scored four points but pulled down six boards, blocked two shots and led the squad in assists with four.
KEY STATS
- The Waves were outshot in every category, including going only 13% from three point range.
- Both teams turned the ball over at a high rate, but Pepperdine led 12-10.
- Saint Mary's won the battle of the boards at 51-31 as well as the points in the paint margin, going for 40 to the Waves' 18.
RECAP
In the first half, Saint Mary's led the Waves while keeping Pepperdine from scoring and capitalizing on turnovers. The Waves briefly led with an Odum three, but SMC quickly took control. Despite some highlights from Coulibaly and Todorovic, Pepperdine's cold shooting and turnovers allowed the Gaels to extend their lead, ending the half up 27–16.
At the start of the second half, Butka scored early but Saint Mary's responded with consistent scoring and ruling the boards. Turnovers and missed opportunities hindered the Waves progress. SMC capitalized on fast breaks as well as rebounding and scoring from the inside to a 28-point lead, eventually leading to a 71-41 final.
