MALIBU, Calif. — The Pepperdine men's tennis team will play in two tournaments this weekend: the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men's All-American Championships and the Sherwood Collegiate Cup.
The ITA All-American Championship takes place in Tulsa, Okla. from Sept. 21-29, while the Sherwood Collegiate Cup runs from Sept. 20-22 on the campus of California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Calif. If available, all pertinent live stream and live stat links will be available on the men's tennis team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
For the ITA All-American Championship, the pre-qualifying singles and doubles draw starts on Saturday, then the qualifying draw for both competitions begins Monday, Sept. 23. The main draw for both singles and doubles starts on Sept. 25. Cracked Racquets will provide whip-around coverage with commentary via its YouTube channel; all other matches will be livestreamed via Track Tennis.
Maxi Homberg and Chris Papa will make the trip to Tulsa for the first major opportunity to earn NCAA berths. Eight singles quarterfinalists (plus two feed-in consolation draw finalists) and the four doubles main draw doubles semifinalists will earn at-large bids to the NCAA Championships, which takes place in November.Â
Last week at the Battle in the Bay Classic, Homberg and Papa made the quarterfinals after beating Boise State's Jett Middleton and Lukas Velik 8-7 (5). They fell to UCSB's 45th-ranked team of Gianluca Brunkow and Dominique Rolland to finish the weekend with a split. In singles, Papa went 2-1 last weekend; #103 Homberg will look for his first singles win in Tulsa this weekend.
At the Sherwood Collegiate Cup, Linus Carlsson Halldin and Zach Stephens will make their season debuts. Last year, Carlsson Halldin went 21-12 in singles (including one ranked win) and earned West Coast Conference honorable mention honors in singles and doubles. With a penchant for clinching matches as a lower-lineup singles player, Stephens went 12-7 in singles as a true freshman last season.
Aside from Pepperdine and the hosting SMU Mustangs, seven Division I teams are expected to compete at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup over the weekend. No ranked players or doubles teams are entered in the draw.
From here, the Waves will head to two more tournaments next weekend: the SoCal Intercollegiates (Sept. 26-29) and the Milwaukee Tennis Classic (Sept. 27-29).
