Dunphy Helps USA Women to Silver in Paris

MALIBU, Calif. — Head Coach Emeritus Marv Dunphy of the Pepperdine men's volleyball team played a role in his ninth-consecutive Olympic Games this Summer, helping the U.S. women's volleyball team to a silver medal finish on Sunday morning.

This Olympics, Dunphy served as a consultant coach for the third time with the women's program and sixth time overall.  He also was head coach in 1988 and an assistant in 2000 for the men's team and scouting coach in 2016 for the women's squad.  Dunphy team's full medal count includes three golds, two silver and one bronze and it is the fifth-consecutive Games that the U.S. has medaled with him on the sidelines in some fashion.

He started his presence at the Olympic Games by leading the U.S. men's team to gold in 1988.  He then helped the American men, and Pepperdine alumnus Sean Rooney, to gold once again in 2008 and then the women, and Pepperdine alumna Kim Hill, to gold in 2020.  The 2020 gold was the first gold medal won by any Pepperdine woman all-time.

In Paris, the Americans got off to a slow start after falling to China, 3-2, but rallied quickly to finish out pool play with a pair of wins – 3-2 over Serbia and 3-0 over host country France.  The U.S. then made quick work of the quarterfinal match by sweeping Poland, before duking out a five-set win over Brazil.  Italy would win the final matchup in the sport, however, and the Americans would end the journey with a silver medal.

Pepperdine's all-time medal count is now 23: nine gold, eight silver and six bronze.  Pepperdine women's soccer alumna Lynn Williams won gold with the U.S. women's soccer team on Saturday.  If coaches did receive medals, however, Pepperdine coaches would add another seven gold medals, four silver medals and five bronze medals.  Along with Dunphy, the Waves' efforts in Paris were rounded out by a silver medal finish for Pepperdine Beach Volleyball Head Coach Marcio Sicoli's Canadian women's pair and a bronze medal output by Pepperdine water polo alumnus (1993-97) and one-time head coach (2006-11) Jack Kocur, who served as a video scout for the U.S. men's water polo squad.

Dunphy is one of eight Pepperdine coaches to be a part of a medal-winning program at the Olympics.  He is the second to help lead at least four different teams to medal.  While he has now led six teams to medal at the Games, Sicoli has led four.
