PARIS - Pepperdine women's soccer alumna Lynn Williams ('15) won gold with the United States Women's National soccer team Saturday morning after a 1-0 win over Brazil. Twila Kilgore, a former Pepperdine assistant coach, helped lead the team to victory. It is the ninth-overall gold medal won by a Wave and just the second-ever won by a female Pepperdine alum.
Williams won bronze with the team in the 2021 Olympics, but this is the first gold medal for the Pepperdine women's soccer program. It is also the first time a Pepperdine soccer coach has participated in an Olympic medal match.
As the program's first All-American, Williams was a playmaker every time she put on a Pepperdine jersey. Named to United Soccer Coaches All-West Region first team all four years, Williams currently sits in the top five all-time Pepperdine record book in 28 categories, including goals (39), game-winning goals (15), and multi-assist games (5).
In the National Women's Soccer League, Williams holds the record for most goals scored at 79. She is currently a member of the reigning NWSL champion Gotham FC.
This win comes one day after beach volleyball head coach Marsio Sicoli helped the Canadian beach volleyball duo Brandi Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Parades win silver in a three-set loss to Silva Raos and Santos Lisboa of Brazil.
Pepperdine's all-time medal count is now at 24: nine gold, nine silver and six bronze.
The Waves look to add to their medal count tomorrow morning as men's volleyball coach Marv Dunphy will be coaching in his fifth Olympic gold-medal match as the United States women's volleyball team plays Italy.
USWNT's Path to Gold:
Group stage: USA 3, Zambia 0
Group stage: USA 4, Germany 1
Group stage: USA 2, Australia 1
Quarterfinal: USA 1, Japan 0
Semifinal: USA 1, Germany 0
Gold medal match: USA 1, Brazil 0
