Edward Winter Claims Final WCC Singles Player of the Week Award

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — After clinching the Pepperdine men's tennis team's share of the West Coast Conference regular-season title on Sunday, freshman Edward Winter claimed this season's final WCC Singles Player of the Week award.

This is Winter's second weekly singles honor and the third for the Waves this season. Winter won his first singles player of the week award on March 5 after beating then-No. 20 Pablo Masjuan of UC Santa Barbara in Pepperdine's 6-1 win over the Gauchos.

In a week that saw the #40 Waves play four matches in seven days, Winter saved his best and most important performance for last against Pacific's Peter Alam. While Pepperdine was up 3-1 over #48 Pacific, Winter was staring down a 5-3 deficit in the second set after losing his first 6-4. With his back against the wall, Winter held serve in the ninth game and broke Alam in the tenth game to extend his match. He then went on to force a tiebreaker, in which he prevailed to win the second set 7-6 (4).

That perseverance would pay off.

Pacific eventually the match 3-3 with two three-set wins, leaving Winter and Alam on court one to decide the match. In the third set, Winter rattled off the first three games to take a lead he wouldn't relinquish, as he broke Alam in the seventh game to cap off his 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1 victory.

Earlier in the week, Winter went 1-0 and had two unfinished matches. Against Portland, he outlasted Oscar Brown on court one for a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win. This season, Winter has been at the top spot in the singles lineup in all 19 dual matches he has played — including seven of the eight WCC contests.

Winter and the Waves head to San Diego for the WCC Tournament, which will take place at the Aztec Tennis Center from April 26-27. Pepperdine's first match will be against either 3-seed Pacific or 6-seed Portland in the semifinals on Friday at 10 a.m.
