MORAGA, Calif. — Staying in the hunt for a share of the West Coast Conference regular-season title, the Pepperdine men's tennis team won its fifth-consecutive match with its 4-0 sweep at Saint Mary's on Friday afternoon.
The Waves (12-10, 6-1 WCC) have now won five straight matches heading into Sunday's regular-season finale at #48 Pacific. With Pepperdine's win over the Gaels (7-13, 2-5 WCC) and Pacific's loss to Gonzaga on Friday, Pepperdine can clinch a share of the WCC regular-season title with a win at Pacific on Sunday. Should #16 San Diego lose to LMU on Saturday, Pepperdine can clinch the regular-season title outright on Sunday.
Pepperdine dominated Saint Mary's from start to finish. The Waves won the doubles point handily thanks to Chris Papa and Zach Stephens' 6-1 win at the third position, then Edward Winter and Pietro Fellin clinched the doubles point with their 7-5 win on court two.
In singles play, five Waves won their first sets en route to the 4-0 sweep. Stephens gave Pepperdine a 2-0 lead with his straight-set, 7-5, 6-3 win over Pierre Lieutuad at the fifth position for his fifth WCC win. Linus Carlsson Halldin beat Mathis Moysan 6-4, 6-2 on court three, then Robert Shelton clinched the match for Pepperdine with his 6-2, 6-1 win at the sixth position over Paulo Hugo Etchecoin. When Shelton clinched, Pepperdine was up in two of the remaining matches.
