SERIES VS. SANTA CLARA: All-in-all, the Waves are an even 44-44 with the Broncos, including 19-21 at home. Both contests did not break in Pepperdine's favor last year with a loss in Firestone Fieldhouse 58-79 and a larger-margin loss on the road. Pepperdine looks to stamp a winning record against Santa Clara to open conference play.
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS: Santa Clara is 6-5 to start the season, including 0-1 in conference play. The Broncos lost to Saint Mary's in their WCC opener Thursday night 56-64 in overtime. Senior Olivia Pollerd leads the squad in points while sophomore Maddie Naro has averaged four assists in the last four games. The two combined for 26 points against Saint Mary's.
LAST TIME OUT: Last Saturday's game was Pepperdine's sole non-conference game outside the state of California against the University of New Mexico. Despite the tumultuous week with the Franklin Fire threatening campus all week, the team persevered and were able to find alternative sites for practice in the days leading up to departure for Albuquerque. Freshman Chloe Sotell (Samford, Conn.) set a new career-high with 24 points just two games after dropping 19 points. The Waves dropped the last non-conference game of the season to the Lobos 59-82.
THE SQUAD: Pepperdine returns eight on the 12-person roster. New faces include transfers Malia and Makena Mastora, sisters from Cal State San Marcos and Saint Mary's, respectively. Other new faces include graduate Ornela Muca from Cal and freshman Chloe Sotell from Stamford, Conn.
SOARING SOTELL: Chloe is growing into her own and serving a pivotal role as her first season of collegiate basketball gets underway. Over the past four games, Sotell has averaged 16.8 ppg and 3.3 assists. The Connecticut native is the only freshman on the team and stands currently has the second-most points scored through the first nine games, including a team-high 21 threes.
BREWING WITH BRUBAKER: Tying her highest D-I performance three separate times this season, the senior is shaping up to have her best year yet with the Waves. Leading the team, the Washington native has 101 points and a .893 free throw percentage. Just eight games into the season, Brubaker has already accumulated over 65% of her overall points last year, on pace to break her record with flying colors.
AT THE HELM: Katie Faulkner is entering her first year as the head coach of the Waves. Previously, Faulkner served as an assistant at the University of Washington for three seasons. During her tenure, Faulkner took Washington to the WNIT Final four in the program's first postseason berth in six years. Prior to joining the Huskies, the Montana alumnae served as an assistant coach at Oregon State from 2016-2021. In those five seasons, the Beavers garnered a 118-37 record while going to the NCAA tournament four years in a row, including a 2018 Elite Eight appearance.
