Waves Head to New Mexico to Close Out Non-Conference Play

The Pepperdine women's basketball team travels outside California for the first time this season, visiting the Lobos of New Mexico in Albuquerque Sunday.
GAME #9: Sunday (Dec. 15) Pepperdine (5-3) vs. New Mexico (5-5) at The Pit in Albuquerque, N.M. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. pst.

SERIES VS. NEW MEXICO: With a small sample size, the Waves have only faced the Lobos six times overall. In those contests, Pepperdine splits the series, going 3-3 overall. Last season, the Waves lost 48-57 at home. The last win against New Mexico came in the 2011 season with a 59-56 victory in overtime.
LAST TIME OUT: Last Friday's game against Nevada was the Waves' second overtime thriller of the season, pulling out a 60-58 victory over the Wolf Pack. Pepperdine remains undefeated in Firestone Fieldhouse, going 3-0 this season including two OT wins. Senior Ella Brubaker (University Place, Wash.) matched her career-high 20 points for the third time this season and freshman Chloe Sotell (Samford, Conn.) had 12 points, including two clutch threes in the fourth the send the Waves to overtime after trailing the majority of the game. Sotell's performance earned her the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Week, Pepperdine's first conference honor this season.
THE SQUAD: Pepperdine returns eight on the 12-person roster. New faces include transfers Malia and Makena Mastora, sisters from Cal State San Marcos and Saint Mary's, respectively. Other new faces include graduate Ornela Muca from Cal and freshman Chloe Sotell from Stamford, Conn.
CAREER-HIGHS: Four Waves have had career-highs just seven games into the season. Most recently, freshman Chloe Sotell (Samford, Conn.) put up 19 points against Long Beach State to open the month of December. Graduate Ornela Muca (Athens, Greece) scored 27 against California Baptist while Harkey and Mastora had their record-breaking games against Cal State, Northridge. Brubaker has also tied her career-high three separate times against UC Riverside, Long Beach St. and Nevada with 20 points.
BREWING WITH BRUBAKER: Tying her highest D-I performance three separate times this season, the senior is shaping up to have her best year yet with the Waves. Leading the team, the Washington native has 99 points and a .893 free throw percentage. Just eight games into the season, Brubaker has already accumulated over 64% of her overall points last year, on pace to break her record with flying colors.
AT THE HELM: Katie Faulkner is entering her first year as the head coach of the Waves. Previously, Faulkner served as an assistant at the University of Washington for three seasons. During her tenure, Faulkner took Washington to the WNIT Final four in the program's first postseason berth in six years. Prior to joining the Huskies, the Montana alumnae served as an assistant coach at Oregon State from 2016-2021. In those five seasons, the Beavers garnered a 118-37 record while going to the NCAA tournament four years in a row, including a 2018 Elite Eight appearance.
