MALIBU, Calif. — Making his first NCAA Singles Championship appearance, Pepperdine men's tennis junior Maxi Homberg will face Oklahoma's #110 Jordan Hasson in the first round on Tuesday.
His match is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. PT. All NCAA matches will be livestreamed via ESPN+ and will have color commentary from Cracked Racquets. Pertinent links can be found on the women's tennis team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
Ranked No. 103 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles poll, Homberg will give Pepperdine representation in the last four consecutive NCAA Singles Championships. Homberg punched his ticket to the postseason earlier this month by winning the ITA West Sectionals singles title, which was held in Malibu at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Winning four matches in four days, Homberg's run at sectionals featured very little drama — aside from a three-set win over Arizona's Zoran Ludoski in the second round. He beat eventual NCAA qualifier Emon van Loben Sels of UCLA 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals, then never lost a break point in his 6-3, 6-1 win over Nevada's Youssef Kadiri in the title match. All told, Homberg has a 2-3 record this year over players in the NCAA singles draw.
Homberg is the latest German Wave to make the postseason under head coach Adam Schaechterle and assistant coach Tassilo Schmid, the latter of whom hails from Stuttgart, Germany. A native of Freising, Germany, Homberg joined elite company with Adrian Oetzbach (Velbert) and Tim Zeitvogel (Baden-Baden), both of whom went on to become doubles All-Americans.Â
Heading into this week, Homberg has a 6-5 overall record this fall and 39 career wins.
Should Homberg win his match, he will become the first Wave to advance in the NCAA Singles Championships since Daniel De Jonge made the second round in 2023. Pepperdine players have made 80 appearances in the singles tournament, and of those 80, 51 have advanced to the second round. Robbie Weiss is the only Wave to win a singles title; he did so in 1988.
